Job description

An opportunity exists in the Council's Street Scene Services for an Ecologist. This is a career graded post.

What will be expected from me?

The overall role of the post is to work closely with the Council's Senior Ecologist. Provide ecological advice on a wide range of Street Scene services work areas and projects, ensuring that biodiversity is considered at an early stage to maximise ecological benefits of the services work.

Alongside the Senior Ecologist, the post holder will also have a leading role on:

  • The development and delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) systems.
  • Support the creation and delivery of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
  • Developing and delivering projects and management plans for sites where the requirement for biodiversity improvements have been identified.

The post holder will deputise for the Senior Ecologist, represent the authority at external events, and build constructive working relationships with other Council services, regional and national agencies, and Government departments.

Essential requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, i.e. ecology.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or other relevant professional body.
  • Experience of UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) surveying techniques.
  • Practical familiarity with Natural England's Biodiversity Metric.
  • Full UK driving licence (Category B) with no more than 6 penalty points.

What can I expect?

  • This is a full-time post of 37 hours per week.
  • Support and ongoing training.
  • Unlike many Ecologist positions, anti-social working hours, long distance traveling, and overnight stays will be very limited for this post.
  • Discounted and subsidised public transport (Arriva Bus Annual Travel Ticket, Northern Trains Limited (NTL), MetroCard).
  • The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  • Great range of benefits including discounted membership to our excellent leisure facilities with free 12 weeks exercise program with a dedicated personal trainer, discounts for a range of retail, entertainment, health and leisure providers, cycle to work scheme, and many more.
