Job description

Terraform Authorship is a group of teams that maintains the Core of Terraform (Community Edition) and drives both community and commercial value. Our mission is to keep Terraform at the forefront of the Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) space by driving industry-leading innovations that improve workflows for our customers and global community. We strive to make Terraform the best tool for managing infrastructure, and HCP Terraform the best product for realizing the full value of Terraform.

The next generation of Terraform innovations will dramatically improve the experience of using Terraform: for the people who author Terraform modules and providers, for the people who use Terraform to manage infrastructure, and for people who manage Terraform at scale in their businesses. We are looking for folks to join our management team who can help orient teams toward these goals, maintain focus, remove blockers, and facilitate the cross-functional and cross-team collaboration necessary to help us achieve these ambitious goals.

We’d encourage you to take a look at the HashiCorp principles: These are not idle words stenciled on a wall and forgotten about. They are core principles that we have found to be necessary for high-performing teams to create better outcomes for our customers and communities.

To succeed, you’ll need:

  • The Vision to see a better future for our customers
  • The Communication skills to win support for this vision inside and outside your team
  • The Kindness and Integrity to speak truth to and on behalf of your teams
  • The Pragmatism to make calculated tradeoffs between “good enough” and “Beauty Works Better” on a situational basis
  • The Curiosity to expand your knowledge of both the technical and business domains your team contributes to
  • The Humility and Reflection capacity to continuously learn and improve
  • The Execution mindset to see your team’s work through to its ultimate, customer-facing impact

What you’ll do (responsibilities)

  • Hire within the US and Canada to grow the team with kind, collaborative, and skilled engineers.
  • Lean on your deep experience leading groups of teams toward a clear shared outcome.
  • Support the career growth and morale of a team of Engineering Managers at varying experience levels.
  • Provide team members and peers with clear, actionable, useful feedback.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design partners to prioritize and scope work, contribute to strategy, vision, and roadmap discussions, and facilitate internal and cross-team quarterly planning and estimation.
  • Lead efforts to triage, estimate, and plan work requests from a variety of sources.
  • Help teams navigate and maintain strong focus through times of rapid change.
  • Gather, synthesize, and process feedback in a way that results in improvements the team can see.
  • Build relationships with cross-functional peers across the organization to gather early feedback, generate buy-in, and drive adoption of your team’s work.
  • Implement practices that improve sustainability and resilience of the team and the products they build.
  • Lead impactful, large-scale projects that require partnership across multiple teams over multiple quarters to achieve clear business outcomes.

What you’ll need (basic qualifications)

  • 6 years of software engineering people management experience
  • 2 years of experience managing managers
  • 8 years of engineering experience
  • Experience leading and managing remote distributed teams
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) for working across a large organization and building relationships with diverse peers and leadership
  • A successful track record of facilitating the growth and learning of others
  • Enough technical knowledge to take in highly complex, deeply technical concepts and relay them to stakeholders in a comprehensible way
  • Experience navigating and managing projects spanning multiple codebases and organizations with separate ownership
  • Passion for fostering a positive team culture and driving innovation while maintaining a strong focus on operational reliability
  • Strong active listening skills, staying deeply curious to get to the real root of potential issues rather than superficial fixes.
  • Experience building and running high-performance, high-trust teams of safety and inclusion.
  • Clear track record of guiding teams to execute toward business outcomes, while maintaining sustainable delivery practices.

What's nice to have (preferred qualifications)

  • A Bachelor or higher degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related fields
  • Terraform experience and/or knowledge
  • Experience working on an enterprise SAAS or cloud platform
  • Passion for delivering delightful user experiences and a background that includes frontend work
  • A cover letter without AI assistance is highly preferred
