Cleaning and Facilities Operative at Devonport High School for Boys – 25 hours per week

Grade B. £12.45 per hour.

Permanent position. Monday – Friday (5 days per week, 5 hours per day).

Working hours are 07:00-12:30 (including a 30 minute break (which is unpaid)).

A Cleaning and Facilities Operative is required at Devonport High School for Boys with the responsibility for maintaining a clean and safe environment for all our students, staff and visitors.

The main element of this job will be to ensure the daily cleanliness of washroom facilities and other areas of the school site. Functions of the role will include cleaning toilets, damp wiping, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, emptying bins, the use of cleaning machines and responsive cleaning as required including spillages and the clean-up of bodily fluids.

Assistance with the periodic setting up of furniture for events along with occasional outdoor work is also required.

The successful applicant will require DBS clearance prior to starting work. The DBS check expense will be met by the school.

Key Purpose / Demands of the Job

The overall aim of this role is to maintain a clean and safe environment for all our students, staff and visitors at Devonport High School for Boys. The successful applicant will be provided with a uniform and training. This role will report to the Estate Manager / Estates Coordinator.

This job description outlines the duties required of the post and indicates the levels of responsibilities. It is not a comprehensive list and the duties may be varied from time to time although the general character of the job and the level of responsibility may not alter.

Main duties

  1. Cleaning of student and staff toilet facilities.
  2. Cleaning across the whole school site.
  3. Emptying bins and removing waste to a designated area, mopping, sweeping, spray cleaning, wall washing, window cleaning, dusting, damp wiping, washing, polishing, sanitary appliance cleaning. Also, as required and following appropriate training, machine scrubbing and drying; buffing; suction cleaning.
  4. Responsive cleaning as required.
  5. Specialist cleaning tasks which may include carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, removal of stains, chewing gum and graffiti etc, stripping and dressing/sealing floors, de-scaling sanitary appliances.
  6. Operating/using domestic and industrial cleaning equipment and materials following appropriate training.
  7. Keeping equipment and storage areas in a clean and safe condition.
  8. Ensuring all cleaning stores are replenished and well stocked.
  9. Replenishing hygiene materials as appropriate.
  10. Informing Estate Manager / Estates Coordinator of any health and safety risks such as faults, damage and vandalism or any issue that may restrict the cleaning process.
  11. Securing/closing internal doors and windows as appropriate.
  12. To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Estate Manager / Estates Coordinator.

Additional duties

  1. On-going physical effort is required to lift, bend and stretch to carry furniture, equipment and supplies. Requirement to assist with setting up furniture for school events.
  2. Post holders may be required to occasionally work outdoors e.g. clearing leaves, sweeping outdoor areas and may be exposed to disagreeable working conditions e.g. cleaning up of bodily fluids.
  3. Post holders must be able to work as part of a team and be sufficiently flexible to respond to reasonable short notice demands.
  4. Post holders are required to support a culture of responsive, quality service provision and to be aware that the overall appearance of the building greatly assists the learning environment and supports the wellbeing of staff and students.

Person specification

Experience

● Working within the cleaning industry. (Desirable)

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  1. Ability to perform physical cleaning activities and lift and carry items. (Essential)
  2. Ability to follow and comply with instructions on cleaning products & equipment. (Essential)
  3. Ability to manage own work effectively. (Essential)
  4. Able to use own initiative. (Essential)
  5. Willingness to work as part of a team. (Essential)
  6. Ability to manage time effectively and work to deadlines. (Essential)
  7. To have at least a basic level of IT skills, for example reading and replying to emails, using a smartphone. (Essential)

Personal attributes

  1. Ability to organise, prioritise and manage own workload. (Essential)
  2. To just get stuck in on tasks with the rest of the maintenance team. (Essential)
