Job description

Unique opportunity for an English-qualified solicitor with a strong background in litigation and dispute resolution to join the Band 1 Chambers ranked Private Wealth Disputes team of a leading Scottish law firm. This role can be based in Scotland or can be fully remote-working.

Role Profile:

  • You will deal with a variety of interesting and challenging English law and cross border disputes for a wide range of clients, including private individuals, trustees, executors and corporate / institutional clients.
  • You will gain experience acting in the full range of contentious trust and probate matters, as well as the wider range of disputes encountered by HNWIs and institutional clients operating in the private wealth sector (e.g. tax, professional negligence, and wider commercial disputes).
  • In addition to litigation in court, you will be involved in mediation, negotiated resolutions and other forms of ADR.
  • You will play a key role in further developing the department’s English law and contentious private client capability, including the development of the firm’s English law knowledge base.
  • You will have an active focus on business development and will need an entrepreneurial mindset- his is a significant opportunity to play a key role in the development and growth of both the English litigation and private client offering within the firm.

You will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of work as follows:

  • Drafting legal documentation, including claim forms, particulars of claim, requests for arbitration, legal submissions and witness statements.
  • Drafting legal correspondence.
  • Legal research and preparing notes of advice to clients.
  • Attending consultations with clients, colleagues and counsel.
  • Working to understand the team’s key clients and referral relationships and helping to deliver strategies to prospect for and win new disputes mandates.
  • Actively contributing to the development of our English litigation capability, English and cross-border private client capability and English law knowledge base.
  • Supporting the development of the English dispute resolution team’s internal and external profile.
  • Supporting the wider firm by dealing with ad hoc English law queries.
  • Keeping appraised of changes in law and developments in practice area.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Strong background in dispute resolution and interest in private client law.
  • Experience of contentious trust and probate litigation before the English Courts desirable but not essential.
  • Experience of mediation, arbitration or other forms of ADR desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong research skills and takes personal responsibility to keep legal knowledge up to date.
  • Candidates should be willing to undertake the ACTAPS Diploma, or the STEP CPD Contentious Estates course- Candidates who have already undertaken or who are enrolled on one of those courses will be looked upon favourably.
