Job description

Litigation Support Assistant - Clinical Negligence

TSR Legal are proud to be working with a legal 500 firm who have a brand new opportunity for a Legal Assistant / Support Assistant to join their clinical negligence team in Newport.

Duties
  • Provide direct support to Senior Fee Earners in the Clinical Negligence Department and manage client work in accordance with professional standards.
  • Undertake assigned tasks with a high degree of self-management and initiative while supporting the wider department.
  • Assist in accounts management, including preparation of bills, Legal Aid funding applications, and disbursement requests from insurers.
  • Maintain accurate logs of new matters and prepare monthly reports for senior management.
  • Handle new Clinical Negligence enquiries, conduct initial client interviews, complete client questionnaires, and manage case setup processes.
Role Requirements

This opportunity will see you undertake tasks including but not limited to:

  • Act in a semi-fee earning capacity and accurately record and submit time records.
  • Undertake basic fee-earning duties under supervision, including taking client instructions and managing files.
  • Ensure compliance with financial control procedures, particularly billing and collection of monies.
  • Review and summarise medical notes for senior fee earners.
  • Conduct legal and medical research to support case progression.
  • Assess client eligibility for Legal Aid and funding options.
  • Maintain client communication and ensure efficient case management.
  • Draft and process correspondence, legal forms, and court documents.
  • Organise and attend conferences with Counsel, instruct experts, and review reports.
  • Liaise with legal professionals including Counsel, costs draftsmen, and medical experts.
  • Manage periodic payments and monitor costs on cases.
  • Support senior fee earners in developing clinical negligence work processes.
  • Assist with typing, document preparation, and general administrative duties.
  • Handle client enquiries professionally via phone, email, and in person.
  • Prepare and manage trial bundles and case files.
  • Provide general support to the department and firm, including occasional reception and post room duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection regulations.
Knowledge, Training, and Qualifications
Essential:
  • Law degree or recognised equivalent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally at all levels.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Negligence law and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
Desirable:
  • LPC graduate or equivalent qualification.
  • Familiarity with legal accounts systems and dictation software.
  • Knowledge of funding options for Clinical Negligence claims.
  • Understanding of NHS Wales Redress Scheme and Legal Aid Agency procedures.
Experience
Essential:
  • Proven experience in providing excellent client service.
  • Experience in supporting senior fee earners.
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in a legal setting in a similar role.
  • Experience with Case Management and Digital Dictation Systems.
  • Exposure to issued cases and Legal Aid-funded matters.
