Job description

Finchley Cricket Club is seeking a Head Groundsperson with the experience and dedication to prepare and maintain playing and practice areas at the Finchley Cricket Club. This represents a fantastic opportunity to join a highly ambitious club with well over 100 playing members and hundreds of juniors to make a significant contribution.

You will be organised, ambitious, flexible and enjoy working outdoors.

Core responsibilities of the Head Groundsman include:

  • Responsibility for the preparation & maintenance of all cricket square, grass nets, outfields, grass and non-turf net areas to an excellent standard.
  • Prepare the ground for all other events and recreational use as directed. Full maintenance and preparation.
  • Maintain to an excellent standard the remainder of the ground at Finchley Cricket Club including (but not limited to) the external grass surrounds, sightscreens, groundsperson shed(s) and entrances. These include car parking and recreational areas such as the boundary bar & patio.
  • Perform the end of season maintenance for all sports including the hire of necessary equipment and organise the purchase of all sand, seed, fertiliser and other items as needed.
  • Liaise with the ground manager on pitch/square plans as well as offering proactive ideas to improve all playing surfaces used by Finchley Cricket Club.
  • Prepare, implement and monitor monthly and annual maintenance programmes to ensure the grounds are well presented. Collect and record data on the playing surfaces. To direct any other part-time grounds staff in maintenance tasks.
  • Estimate the resources required for work projects and make recommendations on the best use of playing surfaces, including producing a costed annual ground budget.
  • A sound understanding of Health & Safety regulations, including legislation relating to chemicals and dangerous substances.
  • Ensure safe work practices are in place at all times. Comply with the club's Health & Safety policies including all relevant risk assessments.
  • Ensure all equipment is correctly maintained and serviced, keeping an up to date service log.
  • Maintain regular effective communication with the Cricket Chairman, Head of Men's cricket, other sport section representatives & the Ground Secretary.
  • Provide a helpful and professional service to senior and junior players, coaches and other users and visitors to the club.

Skills/Experience:

  • At least three years cricketing experience as a groundsperson.
  • Groundsperson qualification (on the job as well as academic) PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates. Awareness of health & safety legislation.
  • Flexible in working hours and prepared to work weekends and bank holidays.
  • Committed and enthusiastic attitude to work.
  • Full UK clean driving licence. Positive, proactive team member. Punctual.

  • Desirable:
  • Must show interest in personal improvement and technical development. Experience in maintaining machinery. An interest in cricket or sport in general.
