Job Title: ORR Bilingual Teacher

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Program Director


Position Summary:

  • Provides educational services and assessments, including curriculum building, meeting Flores standards for education requirements.
  • Work a 12-month school calendar.
  • Develop lesson plans.
  • Present learning in education programs at various academic skill levels (including English as a second language class).
  • Monitor youths' participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to each youth.
  • Utilize Chrome books and other equipment to support education for the students, with possible distance learning and other educational courses.
  • Provide individualized academic instruction to assigned classes based on age group, developmental level, and observed needs.
  • Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and English Language Proficiency Standards (IELPS). Instruction must be consistent and coordinated so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in state and federal law.
  • Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to access the instructional program meaningfully.
  • Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student's level and/or progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records.
  • Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of normative child and adolescent development and competence in dealing with children and families from diverse cultures and ethnicities.
  • Participates in ongoing professional education.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English & Spanish fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and third parties.
  • Possess a valid NYS Driver's License.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree; certification by the relevant governing authority.
  • NYS Teaching Certificate in ESL or Special Education or other appropriate accrediting body and additional training to meet the unique needs of youth.
  • Knowledge in Academic Testing/Evaluations.
  • An understanding of, and ability to work with, persons with diverse needs and from diverse cultures is a must.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

All new hires are required to provide proof of vaccination prior to their start date. Employees who require accommodation for medical or religious reasons should notify Human Resources.

  • Varicella: two doses of varicella vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR born in the United States before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness) OR titers indicating varicella immunity OR documentation from a healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
  • MMR: two doses of MMR vaccine (at least four weeks apart) OR titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
  • Tdap: one Tdap dose.
  • Influenza: one dose annually during flu season. Per the CDC, flu season is from October through May.
