Job SummaryAn opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, HCPC registered candidate to join the Mid Yorkshire Pathology Team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, working in the Biochemistry Department of the Blood Sciences Department.
Applications are invited from experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with a completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.
The post holder will be required to participate in a shift system.
The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust covers three sites, Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospital. Biochemistry laboratories are present on the Dewsbury & Pinderfields sites.
A managed service contract is currently in place with Biochemistry automation equipment supplied by Roche & Tosoh. Pre and post analytic processes are dealt with by a GLP automated track system. Helena Biosciences equipment is used in the processing of samples for electrophoresis and immunofixation.
Over the next 12 months the laboratory will be switching to a new managed service contract with Siemens Healthineers. This change in analysers & automated track system is a great opportunity and challenge to be an integral part of the required validation & verification work necessary to maintain the departments UKAS accreditation.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate would be expected to work as part of a team alongside colleagues in biochemistry, plus the wider blood sciences team with colleagues in blood transfusion, haematology and specimen reception. There would also be the requirement to work independently as required by managers, during the normal working day or as part of the out of hours service provision.
Tasks Include:- Maintenance of analysers.
- Technical validation of assays & results.
- Contacting clinical teams with abnormal results & dealing with queries.
- Troubleshooting internal quality control issues.
- Solve analyser & automated track problems.
- Training & mentoring of staff.
- Update standard operating procedures & conduct audits.
- Assist senior staff in the evaluation of new methods and equipment.
- Attend training opportunities.
- Maintain competencies & mandatory training.
- Participate and contribute in departmental meetings.

Job DescriptionJob ResponsibilitiesThe Post Holder Will Have Responsibility For Carrying Out The Scientific And Technical Work Within The Biochemistry Department Under The Management Of Senior Biomedical Staff. Key Objectives Include:
- To provide a high quality and timely service.
- To follow departmental procedures and health and safety rules at all times.
- To avoid waste and work in a cost effective way at all times.
- To identify problems within the areas that they are working and report them to their manager.
- To maintain clear and concise communication with users of the service at all times.
- To take part in any training required to maintain an up to date knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in areas in which they work.
- To help to ensure that all work is carried out to the standards necessary for UKAS Accreditation.
- To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work within the department as required by senior biomedical staff, including that of a specialist nature, working within Health and Care Professions Council standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.

SkillsTo carry out a range of specialist technical tasks using highly developed analytical skills. The tasks will depend on the area in which you are working and could include:

- Completing assay validation & verification.
- Coordinating & undertaking the training of blood sciences laboratory staff.
- Trend analysis of internal quality control.
- Interpretation of EQA reports.
- Coordinating & performing audits & investigating non-conformances.
- Updating laboratory documents.
Person SpecificationExperience Essential- Post-registration experience in an NHS Biochemistry Lab.
- Experience of working with clinical chemistry analysers.
Qualifications Essential- Final Examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent (In appropriate subject).
- A degree acceptable to HPC followed by State Registration.
- Current State Registration by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Completed IBMS Specialist Diploma in Clinical Biochemistry.
- Demonstrates achievement and maintenance of levels of competency and continuing professional development.
Skills and Abilities Essential- Can demonstrate ability to work unsupervised if required.
- Able to demonstrate good laboratory practice in their work.
- Able to communicate clearly and precisely both verbally and in writing with patients and all levels of staff inside and outside Pathology.
