The Australian Refugee Association Inc. (ARA) is a community-based organisation providing settlement, migration, and other appropriate assistance to people from a refugee background, migrants, and other people of concern.

ARA’s Outreach Programs engage with migrant and CALD communities to address their settlement needs, with a focus on improving social participation, economic wellbeing, independence, personal wellbeing, and community connectedness. Outreach Programs include community education and social support programs, as well as programs to engage with youth such as after school homework clubs, weekly hangout, and school holiday activities.

The Community Educator plays a pivotal role in facilitating learning opportunities through delivery of basic English classes for refugees and migrants with low levels of English proficiency. This position is designed to empower individuals by enhancing their English comprehension and conversational skills, assisting them in integrating into the community and improving their employment prospects.

Job Description

The main responsibilities and tasks for this role include:

  • Prepare for and facilitate delivery of basic English training for two classes each week.
  • Monitor and evaluate students' progress and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages active participation.
  • Utilise pre-existing teaching resources, and digital tools, to enhance the learning experience.
  • Provide individualised support to students with barriers to learning.
  • Maintain attendance and student progress records.
Desired Skills and Experience

Qualifications:

  • A relevant qualification that addresses Foundational Skills in Vocational Practice (TAESS00009 Skill Set) or Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment (TAE40122)

Required skills:

  • Strong understanding of community engagement and strength based learning principles
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness, especially regarding refugee communities
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Competence in using digital tools for communication and programdelivery

Required experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in community education or a related field
  • Experience working with refugees or culturally diverse populations with low levels of English proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver individualised learning and lesson plans
  • Previous involvement in outreach programor community development initiatives
  • Experience in conducting training sessions or workshops

Special Conditions:

  • Must have evidence of Australian residency or right to work in Australia.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a current and valid Working With Children Check that shows you are able to work with children in South Australia.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Child Safe Environment training certificate.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good character through provision of a satisfactory Criminal History Check (Police Check).
  • Must be willing to participate in training and development opportunities as part of continued professional development.
  • Must hold a current driver’s licence.
  • Must own a roadworthy vehicle that is registered and has minimum third party property insurance and be able to use this for work purposes.
  • Must be willing to work in various locations within the metropolitan area.
