The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Cargo & Freight Underwriter to join the high-performing team of our specialty insurer client, in Manchester. You will be responsible for managing and growing a profitable portfolio of cargo and freight business, including complex multinational accounts. Working closely with brokers and intermediaries, you will deliver tailored solutions that align with the company’s strategic goals.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the business’s long-term growth objectives while providing technical underwriting expertise and guidance to less experienced team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a balanced portfolio of marine cargo and freight risks in line with underwriting strategy.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients to drive new business and support retention.
  • Make effective underwriting decisions within delegated authority, including complex and multinational risks.
  • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to junior underwriting staff.
  • Identify and close new business opportunities, collaborating with internal teams when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with FCA, PRA, and Consumer Duty regulations, delivering good outcomes for customers.
  • Support credit control processes and contribute to meeting customer service targets.
  • Solid experience underwriting marine cargo and freight risks.
  • Strong technical underwriting knowledge with a commercial mindset.
  • Proven ability to handle complex and multinational accounts.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including PRA and FCA conduct rules.
  • Ability to interpret data and management information to support underwriting decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

University degree and/or relevant professional qualification (e.g., ACII).
