Special Information:

Position requires good health and physical condition. Working conditions involve outdoor work, often in inclement weather. Daily travel is often required, some under poor road conditions or on back roads. Work schedule is variable and may involve overnight stays in remote field locations on rare occasions. The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through experience in the construction trades with an emphasis on natural and recreational resources.

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is a 3,000-acre public recreation and nature preservation area in Montana, USA. It features one of the largest known limestone cavern systems in the northwest. The caverns were discovered in 1892 by local hunters and became Montana's first state park. Maintenance duties for this position will include work inside the caverns on a daily basis. Being comfortable in this environment is essential to the position. Other duties will consist of maintaining the grounds and facilities of the park as well as working at Fishing Access Sites located in the area.

Job Duties:

  • Maintaining and repairing infrastructure, including areas located in the cave. This includes keeping the cave clean and safe for visitors.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and constructing buildings, facilities, roads, trails, pedestrian bridges, and signage that provide safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities to the public.
  • Maintains equipment fleets in a proactive sustainable manner.
  • Maintaining, cleaning, and restocking facilities & latrines.
  • Mowing, weed whacking, grounds maintenance, operating small power tools and other hand tools.
  • Assists in Regional weed control efforts as needed.
  • Regional and site-specific tasks may exist, and other duties may be assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication and computer skills, both verbal and written.
  • Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work as related to buildings, facilities, and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction equipment.
  • Ability to safely follow all traffic and state laws and ability to tow a trailer with proper towing and safety protocols.
  • Participates in and if qualified, provides training in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain Basic First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Computer skills for data input on spreadsheets or other reporting programs with the ability to use tablets, computers, etc. for maintenance reporting purposes.

Education and Experience:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and 1 year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
