Are you a Material Scientist/Failure Analysis Engineer looking for your next role? We have a fantastic opportunity at Leonardo in Edinburgh for a Principal Materials Scientist/FA Engineer to join us. Leonardo is an international leader in the development of cutting-edge sensor products deployed across a wide range of airborne platforms, pushing the boundaries of technology, accuracy, and safety in engineering globally.

We are looking for a Materials Scientist/FA Engineer to head a small group providing a Technical Service to the Company, across the full Lifecycle of Products focused chiefly on Materials Science and Defect Investigation, across Engineering disciplines. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity at a time of significant growth for the Company.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a value-added Defect Investigation Service to the Company in a timely manner, taking into account customer requirements.
  • The day-to-day running of a technical service group including lab facilities, with responsibilities for H&S, RPS, Capital, and Maintenance.
  • Supervision of others within the group, supporting their development in the field of Defect Investigation and Materials Science.
  • Providing Materials Science support to the engineering community.
  • Outsourcing investigative work, as dictated by workload and technical limitations, to external suppliers where appropriate.
  • Prioritising work, in line with business needs to ensure best value of resources.
  • Working across engineering disciplines providing support in mechanical, electronic and optical activities.
  • Mentor, coach, and teach other engineers and scientists.
  • Advance expertise in the field of Materials Science, especially in adhesives and surface preparation.
  • Lead the technical direction and provide oversight for the team to achieve novel approaches to Defect Investigation.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to self-manage, self-motivate, and continuously develop.
  • Ability to develop lab skills such as micro-section preparation, optical and electron microscopy.
  • Effective communication skills across different disciplines, both verbally and in writing.
  • Willingness to work independently or as part of a team to resolve technical issues.
  • Experience in Defect Investigation with a methodical and thorough approach.
  • Ability to advise on Materials Science issues to the wider Leonardo community.
  • Well-rounded experience in all phases of the Product Life Cycle across several projects and preferably in multiple engineering domains.
  • Experience with customer/supplier relations and working within multi-discipline project teams.
  • Familiarity with techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis, Optical Microscopy, Micro-section preparation, and Vacuum processes for determining outgassing properties of materials.
