Job description

Senior Design & Technical Manager - Hyperscale Data Centres

Location: London, UK

Reporting to: Regional Engineering Manager (UK/EUR), Major Builds Delivery Team

Role Overview:

As the Senior Design & Technical Manager, you will take ownership of a multi-disciplinary technical and design management team responsible for delivering large-scale hyperscale data centre projects across the UK. You’ll ensure the technical integrity of multiple projects, driving consistency in adherence to both the employer's requirements and specific client solutions. This may be done by overseeing dedicated project design managers or acting as the design manager on key projects.

You will report to the Regional Engineering Manager and work closely with the Major Builds Delivery Team to support our clients' DCS’ London portfolio. Your role will involve leading the successful delivery of complex engineering projects by managing external engineering consultants and contractors to ensure they meet programme, design, and budget requirements. You will ensure that global design standards are met and that cost-effective and resilient infrastructures are delivered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary technical team to deliver hyperscale data centre projects across the UK.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring technical consistency across multiple projects, aligned with employer and customer-specific requirements.
  • Manage and coordinate external consultants and contractors to meet programme and budget targets.
  • Act as the design manager for individual projects or oversee dedicated project design managers.
  • Collaborate with the Global Engineering Team to ensure compliance with the Global design standards.
  • Play a key role in delivering efficient, resilient, and cost-effective data centre infrastructures.
  • Ensure the delivery of projects on time and within budget by proactively identifying solutions to potential issues.

Team Structure:

You will be part of the Delivery Team, reporting to the VP of Real Estate, and work closely with Regional Project Managers, Design Engineers, Specialists (BMS, Security, Commissioning), Cost Managers, and Procurement Managers. Your role also involves close collaboration with the Development Team responsible for site acquisition and preparation of the project’s design brief. Additionally, you’ll liaise with the Global Engineering Team to ensure standardised designs and equipment procurement for each project.

Skills and Expertise:

  • Leadership & People Management: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and communicate effectively with teams and stakeholders.
  • Design & Engineering Expertise: Strong experience managing the design and delivery of mission-critical facilities, including MEP, CSA disciplines, and construction works.
  • UK Industry Experience: Familiarity with the UK’s planning and development processes, and experience with the RIBA stage gate delivery process.
  • Commissioning & Qualification: Hands-on experience in commissioning and managing change control for key systems (electrical, life safety, HVAC, fire protection, etc.).
  • Digital Tools & BIM: Deep understanding of BIM and the digital design environment, including its use in engineering and construction.
  • Site Planning & Interdisciplinary Knowledge: In-depth understanding of site planning and interdependent disciplines such as civil, structural, architectural, and demolition works.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience: Previous experience in MEP data centre design and mission-critical facilities.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of CSA disciplines and design processes.
  • Language: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

This role is a key leadership position within our customers organisation, offering an exciting opportunity to work on some of the most innovative and complex data centre projects in the UK.

If you are passionate about design, engineering, and delivering cutting-edge infrastructure solutions, we invite you to apply.
