Job description

Position: Head Lifeguard

The Summer@Baldwin Summer Camp is hiring a pool manager who will also serve as a head lifeguard/pool manager to join our Summer Camp! The Head Lifeguard is responsible for teaching, planning, and evaluating swimming lessons, guarding the pool during open swimming, ensuring the safety of all people in the pool area, supporting and overseeing lifeguards and swim instructors, and learning procedures to maintain the cleanliness of the pool facility. This position will oversee and enhance the safety protocols of the camp's daily aquatic related activities. Our camp runs Monday through Friday, June 16th-August 1st. This position will start June 9th, part-time to start. The person in this position must be able to commit to the seven weeks of camp.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision & Safety:
    • Monitor Pool Activities: Ensure that all class participants and swimmers are visible, safe, and properly supervised at all times.
    • Emergency Action Plans: Evaluate pool conditions regularly and implement the aquatics emergency action plan as required. Be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situation.
    • Water Safety Instruction: Teach and enforce water safety rules and swim lessons to all campers, ensuring they understand the importance of safe swimming practices.
    • Safety Inspections: Regularly inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water conditions to ensure they are safe, functional, and in compliance with health and safety standards.
  2. Swim Instruction & Lesson Planning:
    • Teach Swim Lessons: Plan, develop, and deliver daily swim lessons for campers from Pre-K through 8th grade, adapting your teaching approach to different age groups, skill levels, and abilities. Ensure all swim instructors understand and teach lessons.
    • Assess & Adapt: Continuously assess participants' swimming skills and adjust instruction methods to best suit their needs, ensuring that each child progresses safely and effectively.
    • Skill Development: Provide campers with feedback, encouragement, and guidance to help them improve their swimming techniques and build confidence in the water.
  3. Lifeguard Team Leadership:
    • Lifeguard Staff Support: Support the lifeguard team, ensuring that they follow safety protocols, and maintain proper vigilance. Work with the Summer Camp director to supervise staff collaboratively. Be the point of contact for swim staff schedules.
    • Staff Training: Assist in training new lifeguard staff, providing ongoing coaching and feedback to ensure they are capable of responding to emergencies and supporting swimmers effectively.
    • Staff Meetings: Conduct weekly staff meetings to communicate updates, observations and weekly plans.
  4. Communication & Coordination:
    • Collaborate with Camp Leadership: Work closely with the Camp Director to coordinate swimming schedules, special events, and camp activities.
    • Camp Safety Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with other camp staff about camper safety, behavior, and water safety needs.
  5. Facility Maintenance & Management:
    • Pool Maintenance: Ensure the pool area is kept clean and safe, including performing regular checks on pool equipment, verifying proper water chemical levels, and addressing any maintenance needs.
    • Report Issues: Report any equipment or facility concerns to the Camp Director and work with them to resolve issues promptly.
  6. Additional Responsibilities:
    • Assist with Other Duties: Complete additional duties as assigned by the Camp Director, including supporting special events or activities.
    • Ensure Camp Compliance: Ensure that all water-related activities and instruction comply with camp policies, health and safety regulations, and industry standards.

Qualifications:

  • Certifications:
    • Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent).
    • Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification.
    • Swim Instructor Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent) preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least 2-3 years of lifeguarding experience, with experience in leading swim lessons.
    • Experience working with children, particularly in a camp or instructional setting, is preferred.
  • Leadership Skills:
    • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to supervise and mentor a team of lifeguards.
    • Ability to lead safety training, in-services, and evaluate the performance of lifeguard staff.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Excellent verbal communication skills to effectively lead teams, teach swimmers, and interact with parents and camp leadership.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making:
    • Ability to make quick and effective decisions in emergency situations, remaining calm and confident under pressure.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to perform rescues, administer first aid, and remain alert for extended periods.
    • Must be physically fit and able to demonstrate swimming techniques.
