Welsh Board Chair - Cadeirydd Bwrdd Glandŵr Cymru

Canal & River Trust
Birmingham
GBP 60,000 - 80,000
Job description

Job Purpose

Non-remunerated – volunteer role – reasonable expenses paid

Term: 3 years

The Canal & River Trust is the UK’s largest canal charity, caring for a 2,000-mile network of stunning canals and navigable rivers across England and Wales. Our purpose is to ensure a sustainable future for our canal network, keeping it open and alive for people, nature, and the economy. Built over 200 years ago, the network is the largest and oldest collections of working industrial heritage in the UK.

Glandŵr Cymru is the Canal and River Trust in Wales. We own and care for the Llangollen, Montgomery, Monmouthshire & Brecon, and Swansea Canals. This includes total ownership of one of Wales's three World Heritage Sites; the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Canal World Heritage Site and part of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site.

We believe that the waterways of Wales have a role to play in improving people's lives, prosperity, and health. Only by working side by side with individuals, organisations, and Government at all levels can this potential be fulfilled.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

To support the development of the work of the Trust in Wales, the Bwrdd Glandŵr Cymru, the advisory board for the Canal & River Trust in Wales, ensures a good understanding of the needs, issues, and opportunities relevant to waterways and wellbeing in Wales.

Bwrdd Glandŵr Cymru is seeking to appoint a new Chair. The role is a voluntary, non-executive role and will bring knowledge and experience that will help us better reach and serve the local communities we operate in. Successful applicants will have strong relationships with local politicians and council officials, business and community leaders, and other significant stakeholders in the region. Our cause and aims as a charity will resonate powerfully with you and you will bring your passion for the impactful difference an effective Bwrdd can make.

As Chair, you will form and chair meetings of the Bwrdd, typically held 3-4 times per year, and will also be a member of the Trust’s national governing Council which meets biannually.

This is an exciting opportunity to act as an ambassador for the Trust and to make a difference in people’s lives by conserving heritage, caring for the environment, and improving wellbeing through greater use and appreciation of our waterways and towpaths. We are looking for candidates from diverse backgrounds with a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the waterways and a belief in the aims of the Trust.

The position of Chair is for an initial term of three years.
