Role Description – Smoke Control Design Engineer

We are seeking a full-time Smoke Control Design Engineer to join our growing team. This role involves designing and engineering smoke ventilation systems in compliance with the latest fire safety and building regulations (such as Approved Document B, BS 9991, and BS 7346). The successful candidate will produce detailed technical drawings, design calculations, and layout plans using CAD and other design tools. You’ll be responsible for ensuring all systems are both effective in smoke control and aligned with architectural and M&E coordination. You’ll collaborate closely with project managers, consultants, and installation teams to deliver compliant and efficient designs.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Working as a member of the design team alongside other designers and reporting to the Technical Director
2. Design and develop smoke ventilation systems (natural and mechanical) from concept through to construction issue
3. Create accurate technical drawings, schematics, and layout plans using AutoCAD
4. Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal teams to ensure project requirements are met
5. Prepare design reports, including relevant calculations and equipment specifications
6. Ensure all designs comply with current standards
7. Support project delivery teams with design clarifications and technical queries

Qualifications & Experience:

1. Proven experience in designing smoke ventilation systems (natural and mechanical)
2. Strong understanding of UK smoke control regulations and standards (e.g., ADB, BS 9991, BS 7346)
3. Proficient in AutoCAD drawings software
4. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical integration in building systems
5. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
6. High attention to detail and commitment to life safety compliance
7. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or related discipline
