IChemE is looking for a dynamic, ambitious leader to drive forward its already successful Safety Centre, impacting positively on individuals, employers, and society. Established in 2014, the IChemE Safety Centre is one of the world-leading organisations driving up standards and performance in safety across traditional and emerging industries including energy, food and drink, pharmaceuticals, new technologies and digital. With over 100 employer members across the globe, the Centre is now ready for its next phase of development – increasing further its impact through championing of best practice and thought leadership around complex systems and cutting-edge training – so ensuring employers and individuals are ready for the challenges of tomorrow as well as today.

You are successful in what you already do – ideally with a background in / good awareness of the fundamentals of and current thinking around the safety of complex systems including process safety coupled with a strong commercial and business development approach. You will be able to engage credibly and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders across employers, government and academia as well as wider communities, with a clear focus on delivering results and making a positive difference. You have led programmes, projects, and people towards many successful outcomes.

To drive up the safety of complex systems globally by ensuring the IChemE Safety Centre (ISC) remains a world leading source of expertise and proactive support for industry, academia, government, professional engineers and others. The Director will lead further development of the Centre (established in 2014 and now with over 100 organisation members worldwide) to achieve its full potential in terms of impact and financial sustainability, so enabling further innovation and development.

The Director, IChemE Safety Centre, will be a dynamic, ambitious leader able to use their experience and expertise, commercial acumen and ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders to drive the Centre forward, so helping to engineer a safer, more sustainable world.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

As a senior role in IChemE, the Director, IChemE Safety Centre has a key part to play in enabling the Institution to meet the ambitions set out in Strategy 28+- “Engineering a sustainable world”. In particular, the ISC is crucial in enabling organisations and individuals across the economy including engineering and process sectors to access a range of high-quality support, so driving up standards across the board.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Working closely with the Chair of the ISC, the IChemE Board of Trustees, IChemE CEO and others, to develop, agree and implement an ambitious strategy for the IChemE Safety Centre, enabling it to fulfil its full potential in terms of reach, impact and long-term sustainability.
  • Deliver the strategy to achieve a step change in the IChemE Safety Centre’s reach and impact, across a wide range of sectors, within the next 5 years which is operationally and financially sustainable.
  • Position the IChemE Safety Centre as a thought leader and key global resource in wider systems as well as process safety, working alongside and providing services and knowledge which are distinctive, value adding and complementary to those of other major providers including but not limited to CCPS, Mary Kay O’Connor Centre and the European Process Safety Centre.
  • Develop the ISC into a financially and commercially sustainable part of IChemE operations, setting and achieving ambitious yet realistic targets for growth in reach and impact.
  • Maximise the impact of complex system safety approaches across all sectors as well as existing chemical, hazardous industry and oil and gas sectors, where such thinking and methods can drive up standards and benefit society.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Ensuring innovation and agility across all activities of the ISC including business development, knowledge sharing and technical programmes.
  • Building expansion of the ISC on a sound but ambitious financial model.
  • Ensuring the ISC serves society by using its knowledge and resources appropriately to drive up process and systems safety knowledge and practice among IChemE members, corporate partners and more widely.
  • Maintaining metrics and supporting various third-party improvement efforts.
Other information

In addition to duties and responsibilities listed above, the employee may be required to perform other duties assigned by the Chief Executive from time to time.

IChemE is an international membership organisation and activities often take place outside of normal working hours. The job holder must be willing to attend and participate in such activities and associated travel. Additionally, the job holder will be required to liaise with colleagues located in different time zones on an ad hoc basis to meet the needs of the business.
