Job Description:

The No.1 Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, assembly, and performance optimisation of the race car. This role requires exceptional technical skills, leadership abilities, and a deep understanding of F1 regulations and standards. The No.1 Mechanic ensures that the car is prepared to the highest standards for each race, working closely with engineers, drivers, and other team members.

What you will be doing:

  1. Car Maintenance & Setup:
    Lead the preparation, assembly, and disassembly of race cars before and after each event.
    Supervise routine maintenance, repairs, and modifications to ensure optimal car performance.
    Ensure that the car is set up accurately according to the driver’s feedback and team strategy.
  2. Race Day Operations:
    Work closely with the race engineer and drivers to address car issues or adjustments during practice sessions and races.
    Ensure that all changes or repairs are completed in a timely manner to keep the car competitive.
  3. Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving:
    Quickly diagnose and resolve mechanical or technical issues that arise during race weekends, minimizing downtime.
    Proactively anticipate potential mechanical issues and develop solutions before they impact performance.
  4. Communication & Collaboration:
    Serve as a liaison between the mechanics, race engineers, and drivers.
    Provide feedback to the engineering team regarding car setup, performance, and mechanical issues.
  5. Travel & Flexibility:
    Travel globally to all Formula 1 race and test locations, working on-site during race weekends.
    Adapt to flexible working hours, including long hours and weekend shifts.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  1. HNC level certification in Engineering or equivalent.
  2. A minimum of 5 years' experience in motorsport, including at least 2-3 years as a No.1 Mechanic, specifically within Formula 1 or other top-tier motorsport (WEC, IMSA, Indy Car or Le Mans Series).
  3. Extensive experience in the maintenance, assembly, and setup of high-performance racing cars.
  4. In-depth knowledge of F1 car systems, including engines, aerodynamics, suspension, and electronics.
  5. Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and make quick, effective decisions.
  6. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Proven problem-solving ability, with a focus on precision and efficiency.
  8. Strong work ethic, flexibility, and a passion for motorsport.

Desirable Skills:

  1. Experience with hybrid power units and electric systems.
  2. Knowledge of race strategy and how mechanical performance ties into overall team goals.

Work Environment Physical Demands:
An ability to work and prioritise within a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role will require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
This position may require lifting heavy objects, repeated bending, squatting, and manual dexterity. The work environment is fast-paced and mentally demanding, involving machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must comply with the Company Health and Safety Policy and all relevant statutory health and safety legislation.
