About the job

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is required to provide commercial support to the project team, maintaining commercial information and ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and ensuring that the Company's objectives are achieved. They will liaise with customer representatives and other third parties on commercial issues including agreement of variations, claims, and any additional payments. They will also be tasked with building a new estimating department working alongside the MD and delivering regular updated reports CVR.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure robust, accurate and timely cost and value reporting at both project and business unit level.
  2. Ensure accurate cash flow reporting takes place.
  3. Carry out cost management including forecasting.
  4. Update the monthly CVR, cost and commercial plans and have accountability, along with the project team for the commercial performance and strategy.

Processes:

  1. Help ensure that commercial processes are adhered to across the business unit.
  2. Actively seek to improve processes and procedures within a growing niche business.
  3. Have a good understanding of JCT - NEC and bespoke contracts.

External Relationships:

  1. Ensure that any main contracts entered into have terms and conditions that are appropriate, with commercial risks identified.
  2. Ensure that the supply chain is engaged appropriately with the correct contract terms and conditions.
  3. Ensure that good client relationships are fostered.
  4. Be responsible for subcontract letting, negotiation, and financial accounting.

Internal Relationships:

  1. Effectively assist in managing the team, including estimators and commercial support staff.
  2. Ensure effective interaction between the commercial team and the operational site teams.
  3. Supervise and mentor Junior Quantity Surveyors.

Key Measures and Targets:

  1. Accurate monthly forecasting.
  2. Ability to challenge resources and costs.
  3. Maintaining deadlines in line with the monthly commercial calendar.
  4. Estimating of complex schemes and supporting the Bid Manager.
  5. Conversion rates from active opportunities.

Key Relationships:

Managing Director / Managing Technical Director and the rest of the estimating team, Business Development and Bid Managers.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate is likely to meet all of the following criteria:

Essential:

  1. HND/degree in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent.
  2. Previous experience in the Maintenance and Civils industry.
  3. Proven track record of estimating and conversion rates.
  4. Familiarity with JCT/NEC and bespoke forms of contract and knowledge of current Construction Law.
  5. Extensive experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including chairing regular meetings, measurement and control cycle, certificates, and accruals calculations.
  6. Ability to demonstrate a good knowledge of monthly reporting and earned value analysis.
  7. Excellent team player whilst also holding the ability to work independently on own initiative.
  8. Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
  9. Ability to encourage and support junior members of the Commercial Team.
