Overview

Calling Supply Music Teachers to teach for Harrow Music Service

Harrow Music Service (HMS) is recruiting peripatetic Supply Teachers for violin, guitar, general woodwind (flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon), keyboard/piano, brass and vocal music and drum kit/percussion. We are recruiting mainly for small-group teaching but also looking for teachers who can cover whole class wider opportunities such as the Bb (trumpet and clarinet), Strings or Recorder programmes.

We are recruiting from experienced or entry level music teachers for schools in Harrow. Teachers will be expected to deliver weekly lessons, using cover notes provided otherwise their own planning, and to prepare pupils for participating in Festivals, concerts and graded music exams. Teachers may also be offered opportunities to lead ensembles and to create arrangements for ensembles and performance projects.

Here are the specific attributes we are looking for in instrumental teaching:

  • A skill level above Grade 8/diploma/degree or equivalent.
  • Brass – Able to play/teach trumpet and at least one other brass instrument or more (trombone, french horn, tuba) with a specialism in one or more Brass instruments.
  • Guitar – Able to play/teach classical, electric, acoustic, folk or bass guitar. Please state in your CV. Most of our teaching in primary schools is on classical or acoustic, adding in electric and bass at high school.
  • Piano/keyboard – Able to play/teach both piano and keyboard with a specialism in either.
  • Recorder – we welcome candidates who can play/teach recorder alongside their other instruments or within their class music teaching.
  • Upper Strings – Able to play/teach violin and viola with a specialism in one of these.
  • Vocal – the ability to sing and to teach singing to a high level and in a range of genres, and to lead choirs at KS1, KS2 and KS3, vocal assemblies or whole class singing as may be additionally required.
  • Woodwind, General – the ability to play/teach flute, clarinet, saxophone with a specialism in one or more Woodwind instruments. Double Reed also welcome, with a specialism in oboe or bassoon.
  • Ensemble directing – The ability to direct and arrange for mixed instrumental ensembles at lower and higher grade level.

Please ensure your CV clearly states: which of the above disciplines you offer (more than one is fine); the level at which you perform on your main instrument; your music study and qualifications, where you have gained your teaching experience and two Referees.

Working for Harrow

  • Employment range is Entry Level to Experienced Level music teacher, with pay according to experience and qualifications on a Supply or Fixed Term Contract basis.
  • Payscale: Entry Level £28,500 - Experienced Level £38,031.
  • Payment is on an hourly Supply Rate (As and When basis).
  • If a Supply Teacher is later offered regular work they will be awarded a Fixed Term contract and paid as other Fixed term employees. Pay for Fixed term employees is at a different hourly rate and includes time paid for planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) at 10% and travel time of more than one journey between schools per day. Fixed term employees receive a monthly salary payment including during school holidays.
  • For Entry level teachers there will be opportunities to progress to more advanced leadership levels in the team after some experience.
  • Enhanced DBS will be undertaken as part of the recruitment process.
  • We require two references for recruitment as part of safer recruitment.

About You

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate performance skills in the instrument/voice to Grade 8 standard or equivalent and/or to have musical training in the instrument/vocal/class teaching specialism up to Diploma/Degree level or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate clear communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Understand safeguarding requirements and duties, with a record of compliance with safeguarding.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective strategies for different levels of learning in the instrument/voice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on and analyse and improve own practice.
  • Have evidence of teaching experience to a sustained level of quality.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn about musical genres relevant to Harrow students.
  • Commit to attending mandatory training and staff meetings.
  • Have experience of teaching in a school environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make arrangements for and direct choirs or ensembles.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the principles embedded in Teachers’ Standards.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of barriers to progress for students and how to address them.
