The role

We have exciting opportunities for Operations and Planning Engineers to join SSEN Transmission in the Control Centre in Perth. The team is responsible for ensuring all programmes of planned operational and outage works have been coordinated with all key internal and external stakeholders, whilst maintaining acceptable levels of network security, and supporting the GB Electricity System Operator (NESO) in reducing operational constraint costs. The roles support the delivery of strategic reinforcement projects and connections, including new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems, FACTS devices, and large offshore windfarm connections.

We have opportunities for engineers in two distinctive planning periods – Current Year Planning and Future-Year Planning. Our Current-Year Planning Engineer would be responsible for the current working year, working in close collaboration with the Control Room Engineers. Our Future-Years Planning Engineer would be responsible for 1 to 10 years ahead, working with stakeholders across the wider Business to coordinate and prepare all future years' programmes.

You will

1. Plan outage programmes for delivery of transmission projects, network maintenance, and telecoms works to ensure transmission system operations are safe, reliable and secure.
2. Review project stage-by-stage diagrams and site layout diagrams to assess network outages required during project execution.
3. Support development and review of the Business's future years outage plans, ensuring alignment and agreement with the NESO and the other GB Transmission Owners.
4. Conduct network studies using PSSE software, to inform upcoming outage programmes, address technical queries, and ensure compliance with technical and security standards.
5. Provide operational planning support, including analysis of network disturbance and fault events, and issue of operational guidelines on new network technologies.

Appointment to either a Current-Year Planning Engineer role, or a Future-Years Planning Engineer role, will be open to an applicant's particular area of interest, and subject to their background and experiences. The roles seek experienced Operations or Planning Engineers, however there may be opportunities to build experience in the role and to follow a development programme to progress to the job grading.

You have

1. Degree level qualification in electrical engineering, although qualifications to HNC level in electrical engineering (minimum) with the relevant background will be considered.
2. Sound knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems and the related network design standards, although there will be opportunities to develop your technical skills within the team.
3. Technical knowledge and communication skills to engage with project managers, engineers, stakeholders, and the NESO to optimise outage programmes and find solutions during changing conditions.
4. Enthusiasm and ability to integrate with key stakeholders, the skills to interact with the Delivery teams, and the confidence to make key decisions.
