Group Leader Defence Radiation Protection Services (DRPS)

Location: PO12 2DL, located in Alverstoke, with free onsite parking.

Package: £ 62,210 - £86,793 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Working pattern: DRPS operates a 10-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Just let us know your preferred working pattern on your application. The successful candidate will be required to attend site.

AWE is currently recruiting for a Group Leader for Defence Radiation Protection Services (DRPS), the trusted Partner of high-quality radiation science For UK Defence and Security. Based in Gosport on the South Coast, the DRPS provides radiation protection advice and services to MOD, wider government and commercial customers, in the UK and overseas.

This is a rare opportunity for a dynamic leader to join our influential team, delivering impactful services across defence. You'll lead multi-disciplinary technical teams in delivering a range of services including our Nucleonic Instrumentation Service, Approved Dosimetry Service, radiation protection advice and training and the provision of MOD's Radiological and Nuclear Emergency Response Organisation (RNERO). You will empower our people to excel and ensure our vision statement of being the trusted partner of high-quality radiation science for defence is met.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Implement the sub-function strategy while managing resources in a safe, secure and cost-efficient manner.
2. Deployment of the Group people capability to successfully deliver the strategic goals of the sub-function now and in the future.
3. Encourage and drive agility through the Group, ensuring that the sub-function is able to respond and adapt to changes and better ways of working across the Programme.
4. Develop national and international recognition for AWE to leverage opportunities in collaboration with stakeholders, further enhance scientific and technical reputation and provide confidence to customers.
5. Identify functional and operational risks and ensure that they are mitigated /escalated as required.
6. Exercise financial awareness to ensure the costs are optimised to provide value and seek opportunities to make savings.
7. Maintain a very high level of knowledge and awareness in the field of technical specialism; understanding the industry challenges and changes which could impact AWE.
8. Act as a member of the functional leadership team and work in collaboration with other leaders to drive AWE forward.
9. The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs.

Please note that you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 10 years to apply for DV clearance which is a requirement for this role and the interviews will be conducted in-person at INM Alverstoke on 1st and 2nd of May 2025.

We do need you to have the following:

• Degree in scientific, STEM or leadership and management discipline, equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent experience
• Previously held a people management role in a complex or large organisation or have operated in a role that included accountability for the optimisation of the people resource within an organisation.
• Proficient in the use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
• Excellent strategic and tactical planning skills
• Excellent decision making and problem-solving abilities
• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and organisational skills

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:

• Driving delivery, performance and continuous improvement
• The effective use of HR policies and procedures, performance management, and disciplinary procedures
• Financial awareness and management of budgets.
• Leading people through transformation and change.
• Technical knowledge of the subject matter professions within radiation protection sciences and associated technologies.

You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at DRPS Alverstoke.
