Job overview

Mid and South Essex General Surgery Department are looking for Clinical Fellows to join our General Surgery teams on a permanent full time basis.

There are several roles available, in General Surgery and with an Interest in Pelvic Exenteration, with potential to rotate through the departments, based at Southend. Please state if your preference would include the interest in Pelvic Exenteration in your application.

Are you post core surgical training (or equivalent) or more senior looking to obtain further complex operative experience, prior to taking up a consultant post.

Your duties will be arranged with the Consultant to whom you are responsible, who has final medical responsibility for all patients under his/her care.

Main duties of the job

All roles involve:

  1. Supporting the consultants and FY1 to ST2 level doctors in delivering in-patient care within this busy and forward-thinking department.
  2. The provision of Surgical Services within the Hospital with responsibility for the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of illness within the surgical department.
  3. Close working with medical, nursing and allied health professionals to assist in providing high quality patient care.
  4. Taking clinical responsibilities and be placed on the on-call rota only after the supervising consultant deems them competent to do so.
  5. Meeting with the educational supervisor to discuss personal development plans within the first six weeks of commencing the post.
  6. Performing Operations and Assisting in Theatres.
  7. Responsibility for continuity of care for patients on the ward.
  8. The expected on call rota will be 1 in 13 shift system.

In addition, the Exenteration role involves:

  1. Learning all aspects of the management of patients requiring exenteration surgery.
  2. Learning complex pelvic surgery where primarily benign and malignant colorectal disease affects other pelvic organs.

Person specification

Experience

  • At least 2 years of core surgical training or equivalent
  • Previous experience at Clinical Fellow ST3 or equivalent level
  • Higher level surgical training
  • Ability to develop and maintain a sub-specialty interest

Qualifications

  • MRCS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Higher Degree
