Director & Associate General Counsel, Data Protection (AI)

Dublin, Ireland • London, UK • Full Time

Meta is seeking an experienced and motivated lawyer to lead our data protection legal team’s work on a range of issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) across Europe and the United Kingdom, based in our European headquarters in Dublin (preferred) or in London. This role includes opportunities to advise Meta’s product and business teams on emerging requirements around artificial intelligence and automated decision-making working on cutting-edge issues in a fast-paced, fun environment. The role will be responsible for managing a team of expert lawyers, leading strategic legal counseling to internal legal, product, operations and business teams through all phases of product development as well as engaging with European data protection authorities, where required.

An ideal candidate for the role will have a solid understanding of data protection, privacy and AI ethics principles and a strong grasp of online technologies. The candidate must be a clear communicator, be able to collaborate across functions, including Meta’s global legal counselling and product teams and have strong managerial experience. You will join a collegial and growing team of privacy lawyers who identify, evaluate and address privacy risk in light of emerging laws, compliance obligations and policies. This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities
  1. Serve as a company expert on European and UK privacy and AI-related laws and regulations
  2. Counsel global product legal and product teams on compliance with existing law and on preparation for emerging legal regimes
  3. Engage with regulatory authorities in Europe and the UK
  4. Help respond to regulatory inquiries and investigations related to AI
  5. Provide legal advice and day-to-day support to the internal stakeholders, including Meta’s legal, DPO, AI Organisation and other product and business teams
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location.
  2. Solicitor or barrister (qualified to practice law in at least one European jurisdiction or the UK).
  3. Extensive relevant legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience, ideally at an internet or technology company.
  4. Experience with AI technologies and with European and UK data protection and AI-related laws, regulations, principles, and industry guidelines, especially including those relevant for social media, internet and technology companies.
  5. Business judgment and client counseling experience.
  6. Communication and presentation skills with proven success, specifically manages to distill complex concepts and translate insights and data into actionable recommendations for leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience working on AI-powered products
  2. Experience working directly with Data Protection Authorities.
  3. Experience demonstrating initiative in driving solutions cross-functionally
  4. Experience managing complex projects in a multi-stakeholder environment, navigating complex issues
  5. Experience managing teams and leading cross-functional efforts
  6. Experience working proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment
  7. Experience working at internet or technology companies
  8. Knowledge of, or fluency in, other European language is a plus.
