Packaging Technologist
The role
As a Packaging Technologist, you'll be an integral part in the Product Development process, working cross-functionally with Operations, NPD and Procurement teams to deliver packaging specifications, costings and trials. You will also be the lead for completing the extended producer responsibility submissions and packaging recovery notes, accommodating environmental Agency Audits and packaging compliance scheme audits.
The main responsibilities include:
- Advise NPD/Operations on new packaging materials and size requirements for products, noting the implications on costs for EPR.
- Prepare a database for product lists and their primary, secondary and tertiary/transit information.
- Monitor weights of components of packaging throughout the year and updating data information within production where required, noting version changes, material changes and supplier changes occur.
- Maintain strong co-ordination and communication with operations to ensure correct version is in use and all historic materials are removed.
- Maintain accurate records of packaging inspections and non-conformance reports.
- Conduct quality checks on packaging materials at intake for defects, print clarity and correct artwork version and specification.
- Update packaging Quality attribute records for new, in use and delisted packaging and labels.
- Support operations in the event of non-conforming packaging and aid in the resolution of this through the supplier non-conformance process.
- Work closely with the Technical Accounts Manager to confirm correct cutter guides are used for new and existing artworks for each customer/product.
- Support the NPD and procurement team with product trials and pre-productions, including the co-ordination of ordering packaging for trials.
- Work with Technical and NPD to support the delivery of new packaging innovations.
- Review packaging to ensure correct artwork and specification requirements on arrival.
- Work collaboratively with NPD and Operations to run packaging trials for suitability and testing of performance under various conditions.
- Keep up to date with technical innovations and legislation changes, sharing with the wider teams.
- Gather all data required for completion of the extended producer responsibility requirements.
- Collate and report on packaging recover notes.
- Lead on the packaging compliance scheme and environment agency audits, implementing corrective actions where required.
- Ensure all data required for the packaging compliance scheme and Environment audits are effectively stored and retained as per requirements (minimum of 2 years).
- Any other duties as required to support the needs of the business.

What we're looking for:
- Knowledge of packaging regulations and compliance of packaging to these regulations.
- Experience of working within a packaging technical function.
- Experience with automated packaging machines including baggers and flow wrappers.
- A minimum of 2 years experience of developing cutter guides.
- Experience of working within a similar role/knowledge of working with packaging creation for products.
- Experience of working with packaging suppliers to drive improvement.
- Able to lead on an audit.
- Ability to manage your time effectively.
- Organised and self-disciplined.
- Enjoy working within a very fast-paced and changeable environment.
- Well-developed written and oral communication.
