This position is results-driven, thinks strategically, keeps the "big picture" in mind, and interacts frequently on an interdepartmental basis, both shipboard and shoreside. A successful Manager Marine Technical Operations will not only have exceeded their individual goals but will also have actively supported a group of vessels that have consistently surpassed their assigned targets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overall day-to-day operational management of assigned vessels to effectively and efficiently ensure they are operated and maintained in a safe, compliant, and reliable manner.
  • Drive an active and ongoing dialog with both the shipboard and shoreside support teams regarding their operational needs and initiatives to ensure timely implementation.
  • Encourage innovative means to meet the requirements without undue delay or excessive cost.
  • Maintain awareness of overall corporate and departmental goals, key performance indicators, and financial plans.
  • Encourage the use of new and progressive means to carry out onboard repairs and maintenance while ensuring all reporting and documentation requirements are fully met.
  • Lead the onboard teams and assigned technical superintendents in the development of specifications, selection of vendors, assessment of timelines, and evaluation of costs associated with dry docks or other designated projects.
  • Maintain frequent communications with other shoreside departments and the Global Marine Technical organization to assist in the selection and installation of machinery and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Monitor vessel compliance with Flag/Class/Government Authority requirements and take necessary actions to ensure timely and complete clearance of Conditions of Class/Conditions of Authority/Audit Findings.
  • Follow up with onboard teams and other departments/vendors to ensure all incidents and damages are fully investigated and reported.
  • Participate in succession planning, training, evaluation, and development for all relevant shipboard personnel.
  • Cooperate with the Facilities department on operational issues and projects impacting the Hotel and Marine areas of responsibility.
  • Assist and support the DPA whenever necessary and communicate operational issues as they arise.
  • Perform other duties as required. This job description does not imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited college/university or the international equivalent preferred.
  • Relevant experience as Naval Architect or Marine/Mechanical Engineer and/or experience with a shipping company, classification society, or similar. Chief Engineer's license and sailing experience preferred.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Actively encourage the onboard and shoreside support teams to investigate all suitable means to achieve cost savings while maintaining quality.
  2. Participate in the preparation of annual operational bunker and capital budgets for each assigned vessel.
  3. Evaluate monthly and quarterly operation/financial results and recommend adjustments to plans/forecasts.
  4. Develop, manage, and successfully execute a financial plan for any assigned dry dock capital or other special project.
  5. Manage the guarantee process with Newbuild/Yard through to completion for any assigned vessels.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be well versed in all areas of maritime operations with specific familiarity of various onboard systems (HVAC, Electrical, Mechanical, Engine Powerplant, etc.) and have the ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Must be able to maintain a close working relationship with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies.
  • Must display basic knowledge of regulations governing the maritime industry under IMO, USPH, and the US Coast Guard.
  • Must have the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and priorities.
  • Strong supervisory skills and the ability to communicate at the highest level of the organization are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a multicultural environment with all levels of employees and management are essential.
