Job description

PART TIME EXPERIENCED GARDENER (2 OR 3 DAYS / WEEK)

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a part-time Experienced Gardener to maintain a beautiful established and mature country garden just South of Basingstoke, Hampshire. The gardens are kept to a high horticultural standard and this position is offered to skilled gardeners in the locality, on the basis of 2 or 3 days per week on a self-employed or PAYE basis.

Nestled around an elegant 1850s Gothic property, the garden is a serene testament to both timeless beauty and meticulous design. The formal gardens, spanning just under an acre, are a harmonious blend of structured charm and natural allure. Neatly tended beds and borders surround the property with a variety of roses and potted plants. A small kitchen garden opposite the croquet lawn offers a mix of seasonal fruit and vegetables, adding a productive yet ornamental element to the garden. Expansive lawns, hedges and a variety of mature and young trees are throughout the grounds. To the front of the house is a water feature which will be part of the gardener’s responsibility and a walled garden that sits just in front of the croquet lawn. Beyond the garden flows into the surrounding woodland.

The experienced gardener will be responsible for the general maintenance of the garden including pruning, weeding, edging, lawncare, growing and pest and disease control. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The property is equipped with garden machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

Applicants will possess excellent horticulture knowledge and have hands-on experience working in a similar role within a private estate setting. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are required for this position. A self-motivated, organised individual with a positive attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden are sought qualities for this vacancy. Candidates will be flexible, physically fit and are comfortable working in all weathers.

Candidates should live within commuting distance of the vacancy and have a full driving licence with their own transport due to the rural location of the property. References will be requested at offer stage as well as a DBS check.
