Job Description

The role of Oracle Database Administrator is important to us.

Our Microsoft SQL and Oracle database environments sit at the core of our IT operation and their efficient and reliable operations are critical to the success of the business.

We are looking for someone to join the team who can help maintain, develop and optimise these environments, providing support to application developers and building the infrastructure we need to support our ongoing growth.

Our future plans include incorporating cloud technologies (we are an AWS site), which is something you will get involved in.

The role reports to our Database Manager. It is based from our head office environment in Crewe, Cheshire and is eligible for inclusion in our hybrid working from home policy (minimum 3 days per week in office).

Your responsibilities will include…

  • Assist application developers in the identification and resolution of performance bottlenecks.
  • Provide consultation to developers on query and table design.
  • Audit and manage databases to ensure accurate and appropriate use of data.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of replication processes.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of and maintain the backup and recovery plan, schedule daily and special backups.
  • Administer, monitor and maintain database level security, consulting with and advising users regarding access requirements.
  • Maintain system documentation, including data integration procedures and impacts.
  • Work with wider IT team to refine and implement database strategy within the business.
  • Keep up with industry trends and developments, propose changes and guide implementation.

Qualifications

Experience and knowledge:

  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team with a focus on Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL database technologies.
  • Highly developed problem solving, troubleshooting and management skills.
  • Proven experience of the following technologies:
    • Knowledge of database administration and programming (SQL Server and Oracle).
    • Systems administration on Windows and Linux platforms, including shell scripting, job scheduling, software installation and patching.
    • Familiarity with SQL tuning and database optimisation.
  • Ability to demonstrate a track record of building and supporting mission critical databases in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience of identifying and resolving Oracle and Microsoft SQL database performance issues.
  • Ability to implement backup and DR measures and pro-actively provision for the growing storage and processing requirements of the business.

  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills with a proven ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Highly developed problem solving, troubleshooting and management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Passionate about customer service.
  • Professional approach and an understanding of business ethics.
  • Positive, flexible attitude to work.
  • Proactive personal and skills development.

Qualifications and training:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science or Information Technology or equivalent formal training or experience.
