Our in-house Environment and Planning Services team provides a wide range of services to facilitate project delivery for engineering, construction and operational projects.

Our focus is to ensure legal compliance and environmental best practices are followed and that current legislation and our environmental policy are met in the development and maintenance of assets.

What you'll do

In this varied role, you will:

  • lead in the development of the ISO 14001 certified environmental management system (EMS)
  • work closely with environmental teams to identify improvements needed within the EMS
  • work closely with Quality and Health and Safety teams to ensure collaboration across management systems
  • promote and encourage the reporting of environmental incidents and observations both good and improvement opportunities by all employees and contractors submitted via the incident/observation management system
  • monitor environmental incidents and near-miss reports submitted, work closely with site environmental teams to manage these effectively and arrange site attendance and investigation where applicable to identify lessons learned and improvement actions
  • work closely with environmental teams to co-ordinate the site environmental audit programme
  • develop and review environmental processes and procedures within the EMS
  • produce environmental updates as required to communicate important regulatory changes, process or procedure changes or reminders of essential environmental information
  • lead on environmental initiatives and contribute to awareness/education of pertinent environmental issues
  • lead in delivering the environmental training programme
  • provide support to external accrediting bodies and assist in the coordination of accrediting body audits
  • collate annual, interim and quarterly environmental performance reports
  • carry out the assessment of environmental questions in contract pre-qualification assessments and tenders
  • carry out the coordination of work experience and apprenticeship rotation programmes.

What you'll need

In this role, we are looking for:

  • experience in environmental management systems or an environmental advisory role
  • experience in environmental legal knowledge and its practical application
  • experience of conducting audits and investigations would be an advantage
  • competence in incident investigation
  • the ability to influence and promote a positive environmental culture at all levels
  • professional self-motivated approach
  • a team player, who can build and maintain professional relationships and work collaboratively
  • strong communication skills for interaction with other teams and staff members
  • high level of organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and initiatives
  • strong written skills, including technical reviews with an eye for detail
  • good IT skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • commitment to a ‘make it right' culture, proactively identifying observations and contributing to the continual improvement of the environment and safety
  • a current driving licence and willingness to travel to site visits occasionally.

You will also have:

  • knowledge of UK environmental management legislation and policy
  • a good working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • a degree in Environmental Science/Management, or another similar related subject, eg, geography
  • good working knowledge of environmental good practices during construction, including pollution prevention planning and a general understanding of engineering/construction practice (preferable).
