Job summary
The Emergency Department at Newham is looking to recruit up to five Trust Grade Registrars who wish to enter the GMC Specialist Register via the CESR or "Portfolio" Pathway. They would join a contingent of current CESR Registrars and Higher Trainees in Emergency Medicine in a busy, diverse department in East London with an excellent reputation for education and training. We are looking for doctors with at least 2-3 years of clinical experience in Emergency Medicine or allied acute care jobs as well as MRCEM or equivalent. All posts are for an initial 6 months with a view to extend as required up to 3 years. Successful applicants will work as a Registrar / ST4+ level in the Emergency Department at Newham Hospital which would include leading the department on Night Shifts. This post would suit either a UK candidate who has already completed the ACCS Training Programme (or equivalent) seeking entry onto the Specialist Register via an alternative pathway or an international candidate with significant experience in Emergency Medicine (e.g. completion of a training programme) wishing to consolidate their skills and apply for entry on the Specialist Register in the UK.

The post holder will be providing senior clinical leadership and support in all areas of the emergency department. Roles within the department will be developed as experience is gained, working towards achieving all the competencies on the CEM curriculum. These include:
You will work within the bounds of your level of competence, fully supported by the Emergency Department Consultants.
You will have an Educational Supervisor and will be expected to maintain regular contact with them during your post. You will be supported in delivering your e-portfolio keeping up to date with GMC required appraisal and revalidation.

At the start of the post a training needs assessment will be created. The secondments to specialty training (ITU, anaesthetics, paediatrics, acute medicine, major trauma) will be delivered in each year, usually after 6-9 months working in the emergency department and evidence of satisfactory progression (against RCEM curriculum). The duration of the secondment may vary with changes to GMC requirements, but will generally be between 3 and 6 months in each specialty.
Study leave is encouraged, targeting the required resuscitation courses, as well as numerous simulation courses delivered within Barts Health (such as paediatric emergencies, sedation, USS, trauma team leaders, managing miscarriage, acute psychiatric emergencies, nerve blocks).
In-house teaching forms part of your rota, and you will be expected to attend as well as deliver teaching sessions. Sign off for USS competencies and safe sedation will be delivered in the department.
Management days will form part of your rota, focusing on delivering audit, quality improvement projects as well as engagement with the departmental governance programme.
Focused training for all parts of the MRCEM and FRCEM exam will be offered where required.
The rota is EWTD compliant and up to 48 hours a week. Shifts include days, lates and nights and an average of 1:4 weekends.
Year 1: Emergency Medicine 6 months; Paediatric Emergency Medicine 6 months
Year 2: Emergency Medicine 6 months; Anaesthetics 6 months
Year 3: Emergency Medicine 6 months; ITU 6 months
Secondments may be varied in duration depending on previous experience and GMC requirements for CESR.
