General Summary:

The primary role of the recruiting team is to provide board services (PCB layout, board assembly and test expertise) within Qualcomm’s Connectivity, Broadband & Networking Business Unit. The team plays a vital role in the introduction of new products by providing evaluation platforms which enables their development from first pre-production samples through to mass production.

A Senior PCB Layout Engineer is responsible for applying knowledge of printed wiring board design processes, methodology, and tools to execute tasks throughout the design cycle. Provides feedback on designs and requirements. Performs placement and routing of various circuit boards and develops fabrication drawings and documentation. Conducts design verification at each stage and diagnoses and troubleshoots technical issues. Collaborates with cross-functional teams during the design cycle. Works to create and improve efficiencies, automations, and optimizations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Executes moderately complex tasks throughout the design cycle, with minimal supervision, based on knowledge of printed circuit board design processes, methodology, and tools.
  2. Gathers, reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, and technical documents to understand moderately complex requirements, information, and specifications.
  3. Performs placement and routing of moderately complex circuit boards.
  4. Develops moderately complex fabrication drawings and other relevant documentation, using knowledge of PCB Standard Notes and Manufacturing Design Guidelines.
  5. Contributes to final review of completed design with all stakeholders. Incorporates moderately complex recommended changes to the layout and gain approvals to proceed.
  6. Diagnoses and troubleshoots moderately complex technical issues with minimal guidance.
  7. Manages data for small projects with minimal direction and conducts advanced analyses to identify and recommend solutions to moderately complex issues.
  8. Creates and cross checks new component symbols and PCB footprints for Altium library.
  9. Collaborates with team members, fabrication vendors, and engineers to complete project work.
  10. Manages individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with minimal supervision.
  11. Works closely with the Board Manufacturing Group to overcome any design related board assembly challenges.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Engineering, or related field and 2+ years of Hardware Engineering or related work experience.
  2. OR Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Engineering, or related field and 1+ year of Hardware Engineering or related work experience.
  3. OR PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Engineering, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field.
  2. 5+ years of RF, Mixed Signal, High Speed Digital, and Power PCB design or related experience.
  3. 5+ years of hands-on experience with Altium and Xpedition (desired) layout tools.
  4. Experience of ATE load board PCB layout.

Level of Responsibility:

Works under some supervision. Provides some supervision/guidance to other members; does not have direct reports. Decisions are moderate in nature. Errors are detected and corrected with relatively minor financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships. May require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct.

Requires verbal and written communication skills to convey information that may be somewhat complex to others who may have limited knowledge of the subject in question. Role may require basic negotiation and influence, cooperation, tact, and diplomacy, etc.

Has a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to make key decisions).

Most tasks require multiple steps which can be performed in various orders; some planning and prioritization must occur to complete the tasks effectively; mistakes may result in some rework.

Creativity is needed to draft original documents, imagery, or work products within established guidelines.

Deductive and inductive problem solving is required; multiple approaches may be taken/necessary to solve the problem; often information is missing or incomplete; intermediate data analysis/interpretation skills may be required.
