Lead DevOps Engineer

About the Role:

As our Lead DevOps Engineer, you'll be balancing hands-on technical work with leadership and strategic management responsibilities. You will be leading and expanding our growing DevOps team of 5, collaborating across multiple engineering squads to deliver world-class, scalable products to sports fans worldwide.

In this role, you’ll help architect and support the infrastructure used by fans around the globe, working with a wide range of AWS services to ensure high availability, security, and performance. What You'll Do:

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead and manage the DevOps team, balancing workload and priorities to align with business needs.
• Mentor and guide DevOps engineers, supporting their career growth and skill development.
• Drive the growth of the team, ensuring the DevOps function evolves with company expansion and technological advancements.
• Promote best practices in DevOps, automation, and infrastructure management across delivery squads.
• Collaborate with the Site Reliability Lead to maintain critical service availability and performance.
• Work closely with the Security Lead to ensure compliance with security policies and standards.
• Ensure transparency in infrastructure costs, optimizing hosting and infrastructure expenses across all products.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning, encouraging knowledge-sharing across the team and the business.

Technical & Hands-On Responsibilities

• Architect, implement, and maintain scalable cloud infrastructure with a focus on availability, security, and cost-efficiency.
• Automate infrastructure provisioning and deployments to streamline processes and increase deployment speed.
• Strategically align infrastructure across the business to facilitate cloud adoption and standardize best practices.
• Manage and optimize containerized environments using Docker, Kubernetes, and ArgoCD.
• Implement robust security and identity management practices, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for efficient, reliable software delivery.
• Proactively monitor system performance and security, resolving issues before they become problems.
• Enhance logging, monitoring, and observability to ensure comprehensive system health insights.

• CI/CD & Deployment Automation (Bitbucket, GitLab, Kaniko)
• Monitoring & Logging (Grafana, Loki, Prometheus, UpTrends)
• Networking (Global Accelerator, TGW, WAF, VPN)
• Messaging (Kafka)
• Service Mesh (Linkerd)

Knowledge in Administering:

• Databases & Data Stores (RDS, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL)
• Secrets & Credentials Management (Vault)
• Linux & System Management
• Microservices & High Availability Architectures
• Version & Package Management (Artifactory, Nexus)
• Code Quality & Security Analysis Tools (Sonar)

Competence in:

• Managing Cloud Costs & Optimisation Strategies
• People Management & Team Development
• Understanding of Programming Languages (Java, Python, Node.js)
• Hybrid or Multi-Cloud Strategies
