Job overview

Harrow Mental Health Support Team is looking for a Qualified EMHP or Generic Mental Health Practitioner who has experience of working with Children and Young People in Mental Health Services in the provision of individual and group treatments. We seek to appoint an enthusiastic and vibrant individual who is passionate about improving health outcomes for children and young people.

Mental health professionals with post graduate training in a recognised therapy modality and experience of working with CYP may also apply. We are open to applications from newly qualified occupational therapists, mental health nurses, social workers or other relevant therapy post graduate qualifications.

You will work alongside other EMHPs, Mental Health Practitioners and a Senior Practitioner to support the wellbeing and mental health needs of schools and colleges in the borough of Harrow.

Main duties of the job

This is a role within the Green Paper for Transforming children and young people’s mental health programme. The post holder will work within a service providing low intensity interventions. The post-holder will provide a range of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based self-management interventions to children and young people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression and/or behavioural difficulties and their parent(s)/carer(s).

The post holder will work with children, young people and parents with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

• Undertaking assessments and delivering evidence-based, low-intensity, brief intervention for children and young people, with mild to moderate mental health problems, in an educational setting.
• Helping children and young people within these settings who present with more severe problems to rapidly access more specialist service.
• Supporting and facilitating staff in education settings to identify, and where appropriate, manage issues related to mental health and wellbeing.
• Working with and within educational environments to afford better access to CYP mental health services.
• Training and consultation to schools and other agencies about mental health in children and young people.
• Support schools in developing their Whole School Approach to mental health.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assess and deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions in educational settings for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, working at all times in collaboration with and giving respect to the education function of the setting in which the post-holder is deployed.

Work in partnership to support children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties and their parents/carers, families and educators in the self-management of presenting difficulties.

Work in effective, evidence-based partnership with children, young people, their families and their educators in the development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes.

Support and empower children, young people, their parents/carers and families and their educators to make informed choices about the interventions being offered.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

• Qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner or CYP Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner Or / Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker with additional CBT or other relevant therapy post graduate qualification
• Any other relevant degree qualification

Previous Experience

• Experience of working with children and young people, their families and others in a healthcare or school setting.
• Experience of working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties
• Experience of working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders
• Experience of working with children and young people experiencing anxiety and/or low mood.
• Experience of the delivery of specific low intensity therapeutic interventions to children, young people or their families (e.g. CBT, solution focused brief therapy)
• Ability to conduct other group therapeutic interventions with children and their families
• Experience of navigating complex social systems and environments, who may have conflicting priorities or agendas
• Experience of working with vulnerable groups of children and young people for example, looked after children, neurodiverse children, children with speech language and communication needs, children who speak English as a second language.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Able to communicate effectively with the team, through face to face, video call, telephone and email communication. This includes discussing case work, taking note of actions, updating others in the team and use team meetings effectively
• Able to maintain electronic patient records Use Microsoft products including Word for letter and report writing, PowerPoint for presentations and workshop delivery and Excel for service monitoring and evaluation
• Care planning: being able to assess young people, develop, implement and evaluate a care plan
• Empowering and working in partnership with children, young people and families
• Safeguarding and advocacy of children, young people and vulnerable adults
• Adhering to Infection, prevention control protocols
• Working confidentiality and obtaining consent to share information whenever possible.
• Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with children and young people
• Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with families
• Ability to carry out group work and deliver workshops
• Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness within the staff group
• Ability to conduct mental health assessments of children and young people
• Ability to make an assessment of risk and to record and communicate it appropriately.
• Experience delivering trainings and psycho-educational workshops about mental health issues
• Experience of providing mental health consultation and signposting to education staff and other professionals
• Experience of conducting group parenting programmes.
