Job description

We are seeking a dynamic Senior Nurse as the Ward Manager of our Specialist Palliative Care Inpatient Unit based at Woodlands Hospice.


The 15 bedded inpatient unit provides specialist care and support for palliative patients and their carers. Your role will involve overall management responsibility for this unit over the 24 hour period, ensuring the highest standard of nursing care.


Previous experience and knowledge of palliative pain and symptom control and management, holistic assessment and patient-centred planning and delivery of care are essential for this role. Evidence of line management and leadership skills, as well as previous experience of service development are also essential.


Advanced Communication Skills and Advance Care Planning training and experience are desirable.


Key responsibilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, effective leadership and staff management/development.


The post holder will coordinate the ward on a day to day basis, provide specialist knowledge to all nursing staff on the ward, and will promote a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of nursing care, ensuring the ward environment is responsive to current issues.


The post holder will exercise strong and effective leadership acting as an exemplary role model for the ward team.


The post holder will also be required to undertake clinical shifts each week as a senior nurse within the ward environment. Management days are expected to be worked 9-5 between Monday and Friday.
