Job overview

An exciting opportunity to join the unique and innovative Waltham Forest Integrated Stroke Pathway has arisen. This is the perfect post for an Occupational therapist who has experience of stroke and enjoys rehabilitation. The pathway allows for stroke rehabilitation both on a Rehabilitation Stroke Unit and follows people with stroke into the Community utilising both qualified and non-registrant members of staff. The team that you will be joining is progressive and vibrant, promoting self-management and interdisciplinary working. During your time with us you will develop your assessment and treatment skills, share the professional leadership of a small team and participate in service improvement initiatives. This post would be suitable for an experienced Band 6 who would like to move into their first Band 7 role or an established Band 7 with a passion for stroke rehabilitation. You will have the support of another band 7 OT as well as other senior therapy colleagues and an experienced Clinical Lead Therapist.

Main duties of the job
  • To play a major and specialist role in the advanced assessment, treatment and clinical management of patients with stroke, determining clinical diagnosis, functional deficits and occupational therapy treatment program required.
  • To be dynamic in developing efficient and effective OT working processes to assist in producing a fully multi-professional team approach.
  • To work with the Clinical Lead Therapist to develop the service to best meet changing health and social care agendas.
  • The post is responsible for a team of staff in their clinical area and may be required to work across hospital sites and or more than one specialty area.

Experience
  • Post registration experience working in an acute hospital setting.
  • Experience as a senior OT.
  • Clinical experience in the NHS or similar health service across a range of acute/rehab settings.
  • Post registration experience in relevant clinical setting: neurology, stroke, community rehabilitation, supported discharge.
  • Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience supervising and appraising staff.
  • Experience of audit/research.
  • Documented evidence of CPD, in accordance with HPC recommendations.
Skills
  • Good knowledge of current best practice in OT in relevant setting.
  • Specialist clinical knowledge & skills in OT in acute medicine, stroke/neurology, oncology/palliative care and rehabilitation.
  • Ability to lead & motivate a team.
  • Understanding & application of risk management.
  • Ability to pass on knowledge & deliver training both internally within profession & externally to other staff groups.
  • Ability to organise, prioritise, & delegate, and to support other staff to do this.
  • Ability to deal with challenging situations and with emotional/aggressive patients/carers.
  • Be able to demonstrate flexibility and reliability.
Knowledge
  • Good knowledge of current best practice in OT in relevant setting.
  • Understand legal responsibilities of the profession & associated code of ethics.
  • In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group.
  • Knowledge of local community services and agencies (i.e. intermediate care, reablement).
Qualifications
  • BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent.
  • State registered (HCPC).
  • Relevant post graduate clinical CPD, including attendance at post graduate course/training relevant to neurology, oncology/palliative care and rehabilitation.
  • Clinical Educators Qualification.
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at post graduate course/training relevant to neurology, oncology and rehabilitation.
  • Member of the British Association of Occupational Therapy.
  • Supervision Training.
  • Wheelchair Assessor Training.
  • Leadership training.
  • Involvement in relevant CCOT special interest group.
