Job Introduction

BBC South prides itself on first class coverage of news stories from across the South, taking in Hampshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxford and parts of Sussex and Surrey. Our stories are seen and heard across BBC South Today, our radio stations, plus our digital output and social media posts.
We strive to deliver creative and innovative content, such as our carbon zero edition of BBC South Today, our 'Killed by the Internet' iPlayer special and The Promise podcast.
We now have a rare and exciting opportunity for an Assistant News Editor to help us deliver even more first-class content for the South.

Main Responsibilities

As Assistant News Editor, you will possess great editorial judgement and an ability to think on your feet when dealing with a big, breaking story.

  • Ensure our stories are delivered to the highest standard.
  • Forge key relationships both externally with contributors, and internally with our teams, with a focus on staff development.
  • Be recognised as an approachable and supportive people manager.
  • Work collaboratively with our teams in Southampton, Dorchester, Reading and Berkshire, as well as other BBC locations.
  • Have a strong understanding of how our stories can travel across multi-platforms.
  • Place huge value on diversity, both within our team and our output.

Are you the right candidate?

Our ideal candidate will be an experienced leader and journalist with a clear track record of decision-making in daily news journalism.

  • You will have extensive knowledge of news and current affairs in general, and an understanding of the stories that matter to people living and working in the South.
  • You will need the ability to work unsupervised and to tight deadlines and have experience of taking editorial decisions quickly and independently.
  • You will have experience of line-management, and collaborative working across teams.
  • Full training will be provided, as required.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants.
We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles.

Please note; If you were to be offered this role, the BBC will conduct Employment screening checks which include Reference checks; Eligibility to work checks; and if applicable to the role, Safeguarding and Adverse media/Social media checks. Any offer made is conditional on these checks being satisfactory.
