Job description

Postdoctoral Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate for a two-year fixed-term position in the first place, with the possibility of extension. Join our cutting-edge research program, spearheaded by Prof. Tamar Makin, as we delve into the fascinating realms of motor control, neural representation of the human body, and robotic body augmentation technology. As a vital member of our team, you will be responsible for establishing or joining an innovative research program aligned with the Plasticity Lab's core interests (Plasticity Lab). Your tasks will include data collection, analysis, write-up, and dissemination of ongoing and future research. Furthermore, you will play a crucial role in supporting and training PhD students and other lab members in advanced analysis techniques.

The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in AI-driven human motion analysis, wearable robotics, and human-machine interaction. They should have a proven track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications in these areas and experience designing, conducting, and analysing human studies. We are open to a range of skill sets, but candidates must have expertise in AI applications for EMG-based control of wearable robotic augmentative devices, human motion tracking (including MediaPipe, DeepLabCut, optical motion capture, IMUs), and real-world AI deployment, including real-time implementations for end-users. Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Isaac Gym are required. A typical candidate will have at least two years of experience in the following areas: advanced AI algorithms (e.g., generative AI, diffusion models), human touch sensing and tactile sensor development, robotics control and dexterous hands, mechanical and circuit design (e.g., SolidWorks, Altium Designer, PCB fabrication), and multi-system integration for real-time data synchronization. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams—including engineers, clinicians, and industry partners—and testing clinical populations (e.g., children, stroke patients) is highly desirable.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Click the 'Apply' button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.

Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD.

Please ensure that you upload a covering letter and CV in the Upload section of the online application. The covering letter should outline how you match the criteria for the post and why you are applying for this role. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
