Job description

Overview:

HKS London is seeking a Masterplanner to join our Hospitality team.

Exercises independent judgment in evaluation, selection and use of standard techniques, and solves problems when encountered. Collaborates on exceptional design and delivery for clients to complete assignments with originality and ingenuity. Anticipates job expectations and contributes to project and design solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes experience and knowledge of urban design to proactively contribute to the success of projects at a diversity of scales and contexts through analysis and visualization of specific contexts.
  • Works with senior designer(s) and project team(s) on conceptual designs, presentations, design development and production to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Applies creative design concepts to projects and expands on concepts of others.
  • May participate in project proposals to develop design solutions.
  • Applies principles of urban design and planning including building massing, scale, public space design, building typologies and site circulation to projects.
  • Understands and values public input processes, community engagement and outreach techniques.
  • Supports design effort and client presentations to develop client relationships.
  • Develops, modifies and/or reviews drawings to incorporate the design intent.
  • Produces graphic presentations, 3D renderings and implementation documents.
  • Collaborates on the development of design throughout appropriate phases of the project.
  • Assists in the research of code requirements, local ordinances, and emerging best practices in urban design and planning.
  • Prepares presentation/design drawings and may build models for client/project team review.
  • Organizes and delivers complete project design presentations to client user group or public forum.
  • Assists in landscape projects as needed.
  • Coordinates with consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies to meet overall project objectives.
  • Resolves complex design issues with innovative and practical solutions.
  • Works with team to manage client expectations, team communication and consultant coordination.

Qualifications:

  • Accredited professional degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture or related field; postgraduate degree preferred.
  • Architectural registration or associated licensure strongly preferred or within one year of hire.
  • Typically 4-8 years of experience in landscape architecture / urban design; prior experience in international masterplanning projects preferred.
  • Urban design/planning related accreditation preferred such as AICP, LEED ND and/or Ecodistricts AP, or within one year of hire.
  • Knowledge of architectural software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and 3D modeling (including Rhino and Grasshopper, 3D Studio MAX, etc.).
  • Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp and InDesign graphic software preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite preferred.
  • Proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of urban design theories and placemaking principles.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methodology and practices of research and mapping data.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines.
  • Knowledge of basic zoning regulations, land use and mobility planning standards.
  • Strong presentation skills and graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas at a variety of scales.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to be able to work from concept to detailed design on large scale masterplans.
  • Ability to maintain existing client relationships and build new client relationships.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem solve and apply innovative solutions.
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality.
  • Travel may be required.
