Job description

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Arup’s expertise in the structure and behaviour of ground conditions helps us to find solutions for our clients in built and natural environments. Our team are leaders in Geotechnics working on a diverse range of projects from building design to infrastructure for water, energy, mining, rail, highways and aviation. Wherever difficult ground conditions, sensitive environments or ambitious projects present geotechnical challenges, we provide robust and advanced solutions.

The Opportunity

Working within the Ground Engineering team, you will use your existing technical and professional skills to direct others in interpreting and characterising the ground, geotechnical analysis, report writing and production of drawings and specifications, to deliver projects across a range of markets and sectors. You will also take a role in mentoring and managing our junior members of the team and promote skill sharing across disciplines. This role requires a good appreciation of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering and their application in the built environment with the critical thinking skills to assess the buildability of the designs you prepare.

This role has vacancies in either Bristol or Cardiff, from where you'll also work with colleagues in our Birmingham and Nottingham offices as well as remotely with our wider UK teams as needed by our clients and projects. Our teams in these four offices work on local projects which make a difference to the way people live, work, and travel in Wales and West England, as well as projects in the wider UK and international markets which require our technical expertise.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

As a Chartered Senior Engineer you will have established skills and experience to critically guide and review geotechnical work by others such as:

  • Characterising the ground for engineering purposes;
  • Design of shallow and deep foundations, slopes, retaining walls, basements, and bridges;
  • Preparing geotechnical documents such as desk studies, interpretative reports, and specifications;
  • Attending site to oversee ground investigations or construction of geotechnical solutions;
  • Using digital technologies such as the use of finite element software, GIS, programming, and data processing.

Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all of our members can belong, grow and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.

Our members collaborate on ambitious projects to deliver remarkable outcomes for our clients and communities. Profit Share is a key part of our reward, enabling members to share in the results of our collective efforts.

We also provide Private medical insurance, Life assurance, Accident insurance and Income protection cover.
