Job Specification: Health and Safety Manager (Manufacturing)
Position Overview
The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing workplace safety and compliance within a manufacturing environment. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance with legislation, and promoting a culture of safety across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Policy Development and Implementation:
- Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures tailored to the manufacturing environment.
- Regularly review and update safety policies to reflect regulatory changes or workplace developments.
- Risk Management:
- Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses for machinery, processes, and workspaces.
- Develop mitigation strategies to reduce workplace risks and prevent accidents.
- Compliance and Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with relevant local, national, and international health and safety regulations.
- Prepare and submit compliance reports to regulatory authorities as required.
- Training and Development:
- Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and management.
- Ensure that staff are knowledgeable about workplace safety practices and emergency procedures.
- Incident Management:
- Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes.
- Develop corrective actions and ensure timely implementation to prevent recurrence.
- Safety Culture Promotion:
- Lead initiatives to promote a culture of safety and wellbeing.
- Collaborate with department heads to integrate safety practices into daily operations.
- Safety Equipment and Systems Oversight:
- Monitor the maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems.
- Conduct regular inspections of equipment, facilities, and systems to ensure compliance and functionality.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and policy updates.
- Generate regular safety performance reports for senior management.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Educational Background:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Certification in health and safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, ISO 45001) preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a health and safety role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Proven track record of improving safety performance and implementing successful initiatives.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes, machinery, and safety requirements.
- Knowledge of safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001) and regulatory frameworks.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to drive a safety-first culture.
- Excellent communication and training skills to effectively convey safety procedures.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify risks and develop effective solutions.
- Technology Proficiency:
- Competency with safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with incident reporting tools and data analysis for safety metrics.
