Job Purpose

Job Title: Craft Operative, multi-skilled bricklayer

Advertised Salary: £26,904 with salary progression + benefits

Location: Remote, with regular travel across our regional networks required.

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, maintaining 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs, along with museums and protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. Our waterways are exciting, vibrant places to work.

We are looking for a Craft Operative to join our East Midlands team.

As a Craft Operative for our waterway, you will play an important role in improving, maintaining, and preserving our network for our customers to enjoy. This will involve refurbishing or repairing canal infrastructure, including locks, bridges, aqueducts, and towpaths, while adhering to defined safety, environmental, and heritage standards.

The post holders will be required to work an annualised hours system, including a rota system covering statutory holidays and weekends. Our Craft Operatives look after specific stretches of our waterways but may also support work in other areas as needed, so a valid UK driving licence and personal transport are necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out maintenance and repairs to waterway infrastructure to maximize network availability, often involving sensitive heritage solutions.
  • Use carpentry expertise to undertake manufacturing and refurbishment in a timely manner, adhering to defined standards.
  • Operate various machinery, tools, and equipment in accordance with safety standards.
  • Maintain personal and workshop equipment to defined standards.
  • Respond promptly to customer queries and emergencies.
  • Ensure all equipment is appropriate for the task.
  • Assist in measuring locks and gates for accurate manufacturing.
  • Understand and interpret technical drawings.
  • Supervise volunteers to ensure resource sustainability and satisfaction.
  • Display flexibility in operating regionally and occasionally traveling for repairs.

About You

Operative skills are a minimum requirement. A background in the building trade or carpentry is beneficial, as is a high level of competence in relevant disciplines.

Skills/Qualifications/Experience:

  • Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification (e.g., City & Guilds Level II, NVQ Level II).
  • Experience handling plant/equipment (e.g., chainsaw, hand power tools, fork lift truck).
  • Experience in Joinery, Carpentry, or Bricklaying.
  • Experience reading technical drawings.
  • Full Valid UK Driving Licence.

Application Process: Click on the "apply for this job" button and follow the process to complete the application form & upload your current CV.

In addition, the Canal & River Trust offers a competitive contributory DC Pension scheme, great holiday entitlement (increasing with years of service), and numerous other employee benefits:

  • Competitive contributory DC Pension scheme.
  • 25 days paid holiday (plus paid Bank Holidays), increasing to 30 days after 5 years.
  • Annual £200 personal learning & growth award.
  • Free access to specialist counselling services.
  • Access to a range of employee benefits, including discounts and holiday purchase schemes.
  • 2 days paid volunteering leave per annum.
