Job description

Reports to: Mechanical Design & Analysis Functional Manager

Key Purpose of Job

SSTL are looking for a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to support current and future flight spacecraft projects. You will support the design of new structures and the integration of sub-systems from concepts through to final designs. The role will include mechanical design, systems integration, and build support activities.

You will work closely with project managers, system engineers, manufacturing, and senior/principal analysts.

Key Tasks
  1. Design components/systems to fulfill customer requirements using 3D modeling tools and techniques.
  2. Complete manufacturing drawings to enable component procurement and support manufacturing activities and inspections.
  3. Document and implement design changes using Engineering Change Notices.
  4. Write detailed assembly procedures and technical build information.
  5. Undertake integration of mechanical components/assemblies in clean room facilities.
  6. Create and maintain build logs.
  7. Create BoMs and manage/input into MRP systems.
  8. Support the design of electronics enclosures, generate PCB board outlines, and liaise with the electrical design team to ensure compatibility with printed circuit assemblies.
Other Requirements
  1. Flexibility and willingness to support other teams/disciplines within the department in areas such as Propulsion, Mechanisms, and Optical Instruments.
  2. Flexibility to support at more than one site on occasion.
PERSON SPECIFICATION (essential requirements)
Nationality

Eligible to live and work in the UK and gain security clearance up to SC level.

Qualifications

A good degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Experience

Proven and relevant experience, preferably in the space industry although this is not essential. Practical experience in support of mechanical build and testing activities is an advantage.

Knowledge & Skills
  1. Competent use of SolidWorks CAD package is essential, and familiarity with MRP systems is an advantage.
  2. Specifying/identifying appropriate materials, surface treatments, and finishes for mechanical component design in aerospace applications.
  3. Electrical harness design and integration experience.
  4. Good attention to detail.
  5. Understanding of Spacecraft Systems is an advantage.
  6. Understanding of production and manufacturing methods.
  7. Competent use of Microsoft Office suite including Outlook.
  8. Understanding of the challenging design environment of space.
  9. Good communication skills and the ability to generate technical documentation.
  10. Good practical skills with assembly and integration experience.
  11. Proven ability to deliver solutions under pressure and to tight timescales.
  12. Experience in drawing checking and release.
