Job description

Systems Development Engineer, Simple Storage and Glacier team (S3G)

Job ID: 2920245 | AWS EMEA SARL (UK Branch)

Managing trillions of objects in storage, retrieving them in sub-x ms, building software that deploys to tens of thousands of hosts, achieving 99.999999999% (you didn’t read that wrong, that’s 11 nines!) durability. These are just a few of the numbers that give you a sense of the scale of the exciting problems you will find every day working in Simple Storage Service (S3) and Glacier.

The Region Services S3 and Glacier Engineering team are looking for a talented engineer who is motivated to solve complex challenges, yet are not constrained by “how things are usually done” and are willing to decompose and reinvent systems, processes and tools. If you possess that rare mix of depth in Operations, Networking, and System development then we are waiting for your application.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) builds and operates some of the largest internet infrastructure on the planet; providing companies of all sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS, customers provision compute power, storage, database, and other cloud resources as their business demands them. To meet the growing demand for AWS Services around the globe, we need exceptionally motivated people who are driven by learning and innovation.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Key job responsibilities

  1. Be actively involved in daily engineering activities, providing hands-on technical guidance and support.
  2. Define architecture, design, and proof-of-concept efforts for end-to-end project delivery, ensuring high quality and simplicity in complex systems.
  3. Design, implement, deploy, and maintain innovative distributed system software to enhance service security, durability, availability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
  4. Take ownership of complex projects, managing broad scopes with autonomy and accountability.
  5. Communicate with customers and technical teams to define technical strategies and ensure alignment with business goals.
  6. Stay current with evolving technologies, proactively researching new advancements to recommend and integrate into projects.
  7. Apply software engineering best practices to maintain a high standard of quality across all team deliverables.

A day in the life

On a typical day, engineers might dive deep into understanding the root cause of a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way, consult with top engineers at Amazon or discuss radical new approaches to automate solutions to operational issues.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
  2. Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  3. Experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering.
  4. Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience with Linux/Unix.
  2. Experience building services using AWS products.
  3. Experience utilizing AWS cloud solutions in a DevOps environment.
