Full-Time, Permanent

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Music and Screen Media in the Department of Music.

You will join the Department of Music at an exciting time of investment and growth in our teaching and research in music and screen media. Recent developments on campus include the creation of professional-level recording studios in Engineers Cottage; the Delia Derbyshire experimental lab for audio research; and, as part of the AHRC CoStar National Lab for creative innovation, the Futures Studio for virtual production, with a next-generation audio system including ambisonics and object-based audio. The Department of Music is ranked no.1 in the UK for research in music (Complete University Guide 2022–25, based on REF 2021 results) and hosts the Centre for Audiovisual Research. We have a strong portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including our expanding BMus Music and our recently introduced and rapidly growing programme BA Music and Sound Design for Film, TV and Interactive Media.

The successful candidate will teach modules in music and screen media from practice-based and critical/theoretical perspectives. These modules may cover skills including scoring to picture; music production; sound design; critical, theoretical and historical approaches to the analysis of sound and music in screen media; media music in related contexts such as podcasts and in virtual or themed environments. You will develop our undergraduate and postgraduate provision, including collaborative teaching with the Departments of Media Arts and Electronic Engineering. You will conduct research in an area of music and screen media, leading to the production of critical or creative outputs suitable for inclusion in future iterations of the Research Excellence Framework. You will contribute to the academic administration of the Department of Music and School of Performing & Digital Arts, play a full role on relevant committees, and contribute to assessment and examination procedures. You will contribute to recruitment activity such as student applicant visitor days and schools liaison.

You will be a versatile teacher with experience in teaching practice-based and theoretical/critical approaches to music and screen media. You will have a strong commitment to enabling students to succeed from a diverse range of backgrounds. You will have a PhD or equivalent professional experience and be able to demonstrate high levels of excellence in your research. Creative practitioners should be able to articulate the research dimensions of their work.

The Department of Music’s strategy for teaching and research is underpinned by a commitment to equality and social justice. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and particularly from groups who are under-represented in the university workforce.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Training and Development opportunities
  • Pension Scheme with generous employer contribution
  • Various schemes including Cycle to Work, Season Ticket Loans and help with the cost of Eyesight testing.
  • Free parking
