Job Purpose

This is a broad summary of the role detailing key areas of operation and responsibilities – further detail will be provided in the Main Duties and Responsibilities section, below, which provides more granular detail.

The post holder will be responsible for:

  1. Providing a highly specialist clinical service with responsibility for children with developmental speech and language delays/disorders/social communication difficulties and differences as relevant to the role. The post holder will have well developed highly specialist skills in one or more clinical specialism within the broad range of speech, language and communication needs encountered within the caseload children.
  2. Working closely with parents/carers, and staff to enable children to develop their speech, language and communication skills and to access the curriculum.
  3. Understanding and meeting professional and legal SEND responsibilities outlined in the Children and Families Act 2014 including contributing to statutory assessments of special educational needs and delivery of Speech and Language Therapy provision as specified in children’s Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  4. Acting in a specialist lead role within the Education team in one or more clinical specialities, e.g., Dysfluency, Developmental Language Disorder, Speech Disorder, autism.
  5. Managing and prioritising a defined caseload/workload independently.
  6. Monitoring and evaluating own highly specialist service delivery and providing progress reports.
  7. Interpreting clinical guidelines and adapting to local service needs on the basis of specialist clinical knowledge.
  8. Taking delegated lead on the development of specific team objectives or projects in liaison with peers.
  9. Developing care protocols for specific clinical issues e.g. Dysfluency, Autism, Hearing Impairment, Developmental Language Disorder, Speech Disorder.

  1. Assessing the need for, developing and implementing Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children referred to the designated locality, presenting with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
  2. Providing additional specialist intervention and support to children within one or more specific clinical areas e.g. Developmental Language Disorder, Autism, Speech Disorders and evaluating outcomes using formal and informal specific assessment tools.
  3. Delivering a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy service consisting of evaluation of interventions for complex and difficult cases such as tribunals as required.
  4. Assessing children’s communication and interaction needs and providing professional advice to contribute to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments) and the annual review process for individual children in line with the Children and Families Act 2014.
