Job description

The University of Bristol wishes to recruit a Nondestructive Evaluation Development Engineer. They will be a highly skilled & qualified graduate, who will lead and deliver a project over 24 months with Waygate, Nailsea, near Bristol (where they will be based). The project will enable Waygate technologies to develop a non-destructive, ultrasonic testing (UT) technology to detect flaws and defects in infrastructure used for the storage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and cryogenic hydrogen. To meet market demand, the UT technology will need to be capable of detecting the most minute defects to ensure that LNG and hydrogen storage infrastructure is safe and reliable.

This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) position is funded through the KTP programme of the UKRI and includes a £4,000 training budget and 10% of your time dedicated to your personal development.

What will you be doing?

  • Building and implementing advanced imaging approaches for Hydrogen and LNG vessel inspection.
  • Conducting experimental trials to validate the proposed solutions.
  • Developing an understanding of industry standards and requirements to ensure that the developed solutions are a good match to the real world problems.
  • Publishing key findings in academic articles/journals.
  • Reporting on progress both internally to the team and externally to the funder, managing your time and the workplan.

You should apply if

You have:

  • A first degree in a STEM discipline (Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or Physics preferred) and an MSc/PhD in a related research topic.
  • A strong background in Dynamics or related wave propagation sciences.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • A pro-active and results oriented approach, with the ability to work to deadlines and focus on the things which matter.
  • Willingness to take ownership of the project in all respects.
  • Strong interest in working at the interface between industry and academia in applied R&D.
  • Excellent team-working and communications skills and ability to liaise and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
