The Opportunity

Having been awarded several new contracts, this leading Heat Network Consultancy is recruiting for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. Reporting to the Associate Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the project deliverables meet the client requirements and are delivered on time and budget across a wide range of activities.

The role will require a mix of technical engineering, stakeholder management, and project management competence and experience. You should be proactive and comfortable working with minimal supervision, but also understand your own limitations and seek support/approval when required.

The Position

As the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Working within the Building Design team, involved in the retrofit design activities on existing building level communal heating systems &/or heat networks.
  • Leading design team meetings with project stakeholders to discuss design progress and any project risks.
  • Reviewing and approving retrofit design specifications, including building heat loss calculations, equipment selections, BMS changes, drawings, and other required tender documentation.
  • Reviewing and approving contractor design proposals, change requests, and requests for information.
  • Advising Clients on internal processes and frameworks they should implement to ensure the effective delivery and operation of building heating systems.
  • Developing and maintaining design project management documentation to ensure that the project is delivered in line with quality standards, on time, and to budget.
  • Leading interactions with the Quality Assurance team who will be responsible for responding to requests for information, conducting contractor design reviews, reviewing changes proposed by the contractor, and then reviewing compliance with specifications at installation, commissioning, and handover to ensure that the design intent is achieved at handover of the system.
  • Mentoring and developing Graduate Engineers, ensuring the upskilling and knowledge growth of these individuals.

The Person

  • BEng or MEng degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years design experience within building services engineering / energy / heat networks / hydraulic system design.
  • Chartered engineer with the Engineering Council – note relevant experience would be acceptable with a view to attaining Chartership in the short term.
  • Knowledge of Communal and District Heating network design, construction, and operation.
  • Direct experience of designing and delivering retrofit works within a range of existing building typologies (public sector, commercial, etc.).
  • Knowledge of relevant industry documentation such as CIBSE CP1.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
