Job description

Our Assistant Catering Manager is fundamental to ensuring that they support the Assistant Catering Director in developing and managing the catering services in the Boarding Houses. The Boarding Houses are integral to the boys' lives; therefore, the Catering Services has a direct impact on the boys' experience of life at Eton College and their overall nutritional welfare. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Boarding Houses Catering Teams.

Main Duties

  1. Work alongside the Assistant Catering Director, House Masters, and Dames to ensure the smooth, efficient, and effective catering service in the Boarding House. In addition to act as cover for the Assistant Catering Director. These duties include, but are not limited to:
  2. Ensure consistency in the quality of menus and standards across the Boarding Houses are maintained at all times;
  3. Supporting the Assistant Catering Director in the day-to-day management of the Catering Teams to ensure adequate staffing cover in the Boarding Houses;
  4. Being a first point of contact for sickness and providing appropriate cover for houses;
  5. Line management responsibility for the Kitchen and Catering Assistants;
  6. Review the daily food safety and allergen paperwork as required by Eton College Food Safety Management System and Food Hygiene Policy and ensure each house is compliant;
  7. Manage and implement all parts of Eton College Food Hygiene Policy and Food Safety Management System;
  8. Review daily house expenditure and collate financial information from each House and report and action as appropriate to the Assistant Catering Director;
  9. Adhere to all parts of Eton College Food Hygiene Policy and Food Safety Management System;
  10. Review monthly stock levels and report any concerns to the Assistant Catering Director;
  11. Assist in managing the daily administration of the department;
  12. Assist in managing all catering entertainment bookings;
  13. Manage the rotas for each house;
  14. Plan and assist in delivering annual training as requested and required by law;
  15. Train and monitor all new catering staff;
  16. Support the Assistant Catering Director in managing all employee relations issues;
  17. Support the Assistant Catering Director to conduct and manage performance reviews and appraisals;
  18. Support and manage all aspects of production and presentation of service, ensuring high standards of health and safety, hygiene, nutritional value, and allergen control;
  19. Be flexible to work across the catering operation in the College as required;
  20. Monitor staff dynamics and report any concerns to the Assistant Catering Director;
  21. Work with the Boarding Houses to increase the boys' nutritional awareness;
  22. Undertake any other reasonable duties to help facilitate the smooth running of the Boarding House catering services;
  23. Commit to and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion;

The Ideal Candidate

  1. Qualified to Level 2 Professional Cookery or above and/or equivalent practical experience;
  2. A minimum of Level 3 in Food Hygiene Certificate;
  3. Experience with Word and Excel;
  4. Previous supervisory experience;
  5. Experience of managing budgets;
  6. Knowledge of volume catering;
  7. Experience of allergen management control;
  8. Experience of nutrition and wellbeing special diets;
  9. Experience working with young people;
  10. Clear understanding of Health and Safety legislation;
  11. Clear understanding of Food Hygiene legislation;
  12. Experience of delivering catering training;
  13. Ability to coordinate and deliver event hospitality;
  14. Flexible approach to work and a can-do attitude;
  15. Great attention to detail and pride in work, understanding the impact on boys away from home;
  16. Enjoy working as part of a team and supporting colleagues;
  17. Ability to nurture good working relationships with other departments;
  18. Able to work unsupervised and use initiative;
  19. Good verbal communication skills;
  20. Good time management skills, well presented, and ability to prioritise;
  21. Previous experience in a similar role;
  22. Able to manage a team, with supervisory or management experience.
