Assist in the launch and development of an exciting new ceramics studio in East Lothian.

Dukes of West Barns is a home for connection and creativity. On site, we have a contemporary fine art gallery, a workshop space accommodating a dynamic range of art classes, studios for resident artists, and a thriving café.

About the role
We are looking for a committed and creative individual to support us in launching our brand new ceramics studio. Dukes Ceramics Studio will accommodate classes for various abilities and membership programmes. The successful candidate will receive ongoing training for professional development in relation to teaching responsibilities.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting with the smooth functioning of Dukes Ceramics Studio, working as part of a team to launch and develop the programme.
  2. Upholding a weekly teaching commitment (two beginners classes per week) and supporting the development of classes.
  3. Co-managing memberships to ensure the workshop is utilized effectively and members are upholding standards.
  4. Co-managing various aspects of the workshop including kiln use, health and safety procedures, glazing, and other ceramics techniques.
  5. Managing inventories and placing orders as and when required.

Desirable Experience:

  1. Teaching experience with mixed ability classes.
  2. Experience within a working ceramics studio, managing access and kiln maintenance.
  3. Excellent knowledge and understanding of materials and suppliers.
  4. Confidence with numeracy as working within a budget is essential.

Required skills & attributes:

  1. Excellent communication skills, both in regards to teaching and also to ensure ideas, opportunities, issues, or challenges are communicated to management effectively.
  2. Patience, dedication, and a welcoming attitude to enhance student learning.
  3. A highly organised and assertive approach to working to ensure the studio users are upholding standards.
  4. Excellent digital literacy skills.

Details about the role:

Rate of pay is £15 per hour – two days per week initially. Flexible working hours are feasible.
A PVG will be necessary for teaching commitments.
