Job description

Library Assistant/Mobile Library Driver

Permanent

Grade 3 £26,409 - £32,654 Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review

Working 36.5 hours per week includes Saturday working, early mornings and late afternoons

Based at: Unit 14, Gravelly Industrial Park, Tyburn Road, Erdington

You will need a category C driving licence, along with a Driver Qualification Card (CPC). You will need to be able to maintain these throughout your contract. If you can work on your own initiative, be part of a team and enjoy working with the public then this is the job for you.

We are looking for someone to work as both a driver and library assistant, bringing books, resources and information to Birmingham residents. You’ll be driving our mobile library vehicle (approx. size of a single decker bus, 15 tonnes) and another smaller vehicle to do this. The service operates to a scheduled timetable and stops across the city. You will also work at our base undertaking library and/or vehicle duties when not driving.

The Mobile Library Service visits a wide range of communities within Birmingham – including children, families, schools and adults. You will need to be able to use a computer and the internet, have good communication skills and have an interest in reading. We will provide support and training in working with the public – from how to help them choose books, to assisting with information requests, and other library associated tasks.

You will be expected to undertake regular vehicle checks and adhere to vehicle servicing schedules. A flexible approach to working arrangements is also essential due to service timetabling.

The successful candidate will be subject to all necessary pre-employment checks, including a driving assessment prior to an offer being made.

You must upload a Supporting Statement via the attachments part of your application. This is required for shortlisting; you need to describe how your experience and skills fit the essential criteria for the role as specified in the Person Specification. If you do not attach your Supporting Statement, your application will not be considered.

Birmingham City Council is an accredited Disability Confident Leader employer, and we are committed to employing, retaining and developing all of our people.

We want to ensure your recruitment journey with us is a positive and equitable one, so please let us know if there are any reasonable adjustments, additional support, accessibility needs, or if there is any way in which we can support you through your application.

Closing date 5th January 2025 at 23.59.

Interviews for this post will take place face to face. Shortlisted candidates will be provided with further information.
